Assessment of image quality on color fundus retinal images using the automatic retinal image analysis

Chuying Shi et al.

Summary: This study developed an automatic retinal image analysis method that can automatically assess image quality and distinguish different types of poor quality. The method showed good performance in testing, cross-validation, and external validation. The study provides a novel approach for image quality screening based on different types of poor quality and suggests that the method can be used as a screening tool in the early stage of retinopathy grading by telemedicine or artificial intelligence analysis.

DeepDRiD: Diabetic Retinopathy-Grading and Image Quality Estimation Challenge

Ruhan Liu et al.

Summary: We organized a challenge in collaboration with ISBI 2020 focusing on diabetic retinopathy (DR) grading and image quality estimation. The challenge received positive response from the scientific community, with 34 submissions from 574 registrations. The DeepDRiD dataset, containing 2,000 regular DR images and 256 ultra-widefield images, was provided for the challenge. The evaluation results showed the potential of image quality assessment as a further target for exploration.

Automatic fundus image quality assessment on a continuous scale

Robert A. Karlsson et al.

Summary: Fundus photography is commonly used for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of various eye diseases, as well as showing promise in diagnosing brain diseases and evaluating cardiovascular risk factors. Good image quality is crucial for accurate and timely diagnosis. A new method has been proposed to automatically grade fundus image quality on a continuous scale, utilizing random forest regression models trained on image features and outperforming human raters in quality evaluation.
