Wettability Alteration of Carbonate Rock by Chelating Agents and Viscoelastic Surfactants: Synergetic Impact

Xiao Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergetic impact of chelating agents and viscoelastic surfactants on the wettability alteration of carbonate rock using contact angle measurement. The results showed that all tested chelating agents exhibited strong wettability alteration performance in deionized water solution. The combination of viscoelastic surfactant and chelating agents demonstrated moderate to strong wettability alteration performance. The optimum formulation of the two changed the wettability from strongly oil-wet to water-wet.

Impact of nanoparticles-surfactant solutions on carbon dioxide and methane wettabilities of organic-rich shale and CO2/brine interfacial tension: Implication for carbon geosequestration

Nurudeen Yekeen et al.

Summary: The wetting behavior of rock and the interfacial tension between CO2/brine have significant impacts on enhanced hydrocarbon recovery (EOR) and carbon geo-sequestration (CGS) projects. This study examines the influence of nanoparticle/surfactant solutions (NPS) flooding on EOR and CGS in sandstone and carbonate formations, but the impact of NPS on the wettabilities of organic-rich shale and CO2/brine interfacial tension is currently unclear.

Synergistic Efficiency of Zinc Oxide/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites and a New Derived Saponin in Liquid/Liquid/Solid Interface-Included Systems: Application in Nanotechnology- Assisted Enhanced Oil Recovery

Ahmad Nourinia et al.

Summary: Oil production faces challenges such as limited production from carbonate reservoirs, high costs, and environmental issues. Chemical flooding as an enhanced oil recovery method can increase production by adding surfactants. However, synthetic surfactants are costly and harmful. Researchers have turned to natural surfactants and the use of nanoparticles for enhanced oil recovery. This study extracted a natural surfactant from Cyclamen persicum and optimized its performance with a zinc oxide/montmorillonite nanocomposite. Experimental results showed improved oil recovery with the synergistic usage of the natural surfactant and nanoparticles.

Enhancing the Oil Recovery from Naturally Fractured Reservoirs Using Viscoelastic Surfactant (VES) Flooding: A Field-Scale Simulation

M. Elmuzafar Ahmed et al.

Summary: A viscoelastic surfactant (VES) has the combined properties of a surfactant and a polymer, and injection of VES fluids into naturally fractured reservoirs can enhance oil recovery. The field-scale simulation showed that VES outperformed SP flooding and waterflooding, improving oil recovery by 10% and reducing water cut by 47%. It also significantly reduced interfacial tension and altered rock wettability, leading to improved oil recovery in NFRs.

Relative contribution of wettability Alteration and interfacial tension reduction in EOR: A critical review

Xiao Deng et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that a combination of interfacial tension reduction and wettability alteration is the main mechanism for increased oil recovery. Residual oil is divided into five categories based on location and form, and the effect of IFT reduction and WA varies on different residual oil categories.

Impact of a novel biosynthesized nanocomposite (SiO2@Montmorilant@Xanthan) on wettability shift and interfacial tension: Applications for enhanced oil recovery

Mohammad Javad Nazarahari et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles play a crucial role in enhanced oil recovery by influencing wettability, reducing interfacial tension, and oil viscosity. This study presents the biosynthesis, characterization, and application of a novel nanocomposite, demonstrating that optimal concentrations of nanosuspensions can effectively improve interfacial properties and increase secondary and tertiary oil recovery in sandstone and carbonate reservoir rocks.
