Context-Based Patterns in Machine Learning Bias and Fairness Metrics: A Sensitive Attributes-Based Approach

Tiago P. Pagano et al.

Summary: The majority of current approaches for bias and fairness identification or mitigation in machine learning models fail to consider the connection between the application context and its associated sensitive attributes, resulting in inconsistent recognition of bias and fairness metrics. This study aims to analyze patterns in bias and fairness metrics using the gender attribute as a case study in computer vision, natural language processing, and recommendation systems. Different metrics revealed consistent patterns and fairness related to the studied sensitive attribute across different application domains, while some attributes did not follow this pattern. The sensitive attribute plays a crucial role in defining fairness metrics for a specific context.

Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted through breathing and speech droplets emitted by infected carriers, including asymptomatic cases. In this study, the transmission of aerosolized air mimicking infected speech droplets was investigated. It was found that speech produces nanoaerosols that can travel distances longer than 1 m. These speech-generated aerosol droplets are believed to play a major role in the current COVID-19 pandemic. The study also touched upon the role of residual water in aerosol droplet stability and explored the influence of air pollution on respiratory virus transmission.
