Surface deposition characteristics of water-based SiO2 nanofluids on coal

Quanle Zou et al.

Summary: This research investigates the deposition behavior of water-based SiO2 nanofluids on coal surface by real-time monitoring the morphological evolution and deposition images of nanofluid droplets with different concentrations. The results show that the initial contact angle between the droplets and coal surface is small, and the spreading ability of nanofluids is better than deionized water. As time increases, the contact angle decreases and the droplets form a coffee ring deposition pattern. This study fills the research gap on the deposition behavior of nanofluids on coal surface and provides a foundation for further research on coal seam water injection using nanofluids.

Mechanical strength and porosity changes of bituminous coal induced by supercritical CO2 interactions: Influence of saturation pressure

Xianfeng Liu et al.

Summary: The interaction between supercritical CO2 and coal reservoirs significantly affects the pore structure and mechanical strength of the coal. The interaction increases the pore volume and surface area of the coal. Additionally, the saturation pressure of supercritical CO2 has a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the coal, with higher pressures leading to rapid reduction in mechanical strength.

Contribution of thermal expansion on gas adsorption to coal sorption-induced swelling

Junqiang Kang et al.

Summary: The adsorption of methane in coal releases heat and causes thermal expansion, which is related to adsorption swelling and adsorption capacity. The study finds that thermal expansion due to adsorption heat may contribute to 35% of the total adsorption strain under ideal isentropic conditions. Laboratory experiments cannot accurately measure the thermal expansion during adsorption, but reduced heat dissipation in coalbed reservoirs may retain thermal deformation and affect short-term permeability evolution.

Experimental study of advantages of coalbed gas bioengineering

Xianbo Su et al.

Summary: Coalbed gas bioengineering (CGB) is a fermentation engineering that converts organic components of coal to methane, enhancing coalbed gas production. Laboratory simulations using different rank coals showed that all ranks of coal have potential for biomethane production. The bioconversion process also enhanced coal seam desorption capacity for methane and increased coal permeability.

Influence of sub-supercritical CO2 on pore structure and fractal characteristics of anthracite: An experimental study

Xiaolei Wang et al.

Summary: Geological storage of CO2 in coal seams is an effective method to alleviate the greenhouse effect. This study investigated the effects of sub-supercritical CO2 intrusion on coal pore structures and found that CO2 injection leads to changes in porosity and micro-minipore volume. The causes of these changes include mineral dissolution, extraction of functional groups, destruction of aromatic layers, and rearrangement of macromolecular structure. Supercritical CO2 has a greater impact on coal pore structure compared to subcritical CO2. Therefore, it is crucial to choose an appropriate injection and storage pressure of CO2.

Experimental study on the deformation behaviour, energy evolution law and failure mechanism of tectonic coal subjected to cyclic loads

Deyi Gao et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior and mechanical properties of tectonic coal under cyclic loading were studied. It was found that the stress-strain curve of tectonic coal could be divided into four stages, and its internal structure can be damaged. Tectonic coal exhibits nonlinear energy storage characteristics and is prone to coal and gas outbursts.

Zhiyong Xiao et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new apparent permeability model that reveals the evolution of permeability in the full pore pressure range. The model was validated through experimental tests and showed the limitation of the slippage effect at low pore pressures. The study also analyzed the evolution of the slippage coefficient and the intrinsic permeability under different conditions.

Yankun Ma

Summary: This study used SEM and MIP techniques to analyze the pore structure of natural coal and investigated the influence of coalification degree on the pores using multiscale fractal analysis. The results showed that the pores in coal can be classified into different scales as seepage pores, transition pores, and mesopores, and the size and volume of the pores have a direct impact on the multiscale fractal dimensions.

Erlei Su et al.

Summary: The study focused on the evolution of permeability during coalbed methane extraction, observing the influence of initial gas pressure, diffusion coefficient, and permeability on permeability rebound and recovery. The results showed that higher initial gas pressure led to longer rebound and recovery times, while initial diffusion coefficient and permeability had a negative impact on these parameters.

Summary: This study focuses on the quantitative characterization of fluid storage and structural properties of deep Longmaxi Formation shale samples from southern Sichuan Basin. Experiments including nuclear magnetic resonance and nitrogen adsorption are conducted to analyze pore distribution complexity and pore surface irregularity, which are controlled by factors such as stratigraphic division and shale composition. The research findings suggest that the storage capacity and microstructural properties of deep shales are influenced by stratigraphic division and shale composition.

Influence of sequestered supercritical CO2 treatment on the pore size distribution of coal across the rank range

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: The influence of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) fluids on coal pore structure and mineral content is significant, leading to reductions in micropore volume, increases in average pore diameter and macropore volume, as well as alterations in mineral content. The impact of SC-CO2 is related to coal rank, with the greatest effect on lignite's macropore volume and anthracite's micropore volume. Mineral dissolution may contribute to the reduction in micropores and increase in mesopores and macropores.
