Preparation and characterization of a gemini surfactant-based biomimetic complex for gene delivery

Zhou Lu et al.

Summary: Gemini surfactants (GS) have potential as non-viral vectors for gene delivery. However, their cytotoxicity and in vivo limitations have hindered their development. In this study, GS-based gene delivery systems complexed with red blood cell membranes (RBCM) and/or DOPE-PEG2000 (DP) were prepared and evaluated. The results showed that the dual incorporation of RBCM and DP significantly improved the transfection efficiency and cell viability in hepatocytes.

A comparative study of Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) surfactant adsorption upon the Al12N12 and B12N12 nano-cages as potential candidates for detecting MELs

Hossein Khalafi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the adsorption of MELs on aluminum nitride and boron nitride nanocages in the solution phase. The results show that ether oxygen atoms exhibit stronger adsorption on aluminum nanocages, while the hydroxyl group oxygen has stronger adsorption on boron nitride nanocage. Thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that all adsorption positions of aluminum nitride are favorable, but some positions of boron nitride are unfavorable. In terms of recovery time, boron nitride is not an ideal adsorbent due to its very short recovery time. Aluminum nitride may serve as a suitable sensor for MELs in the solution phase, while boron nitride does not significantly alter the number of conducting electrons.

Cassava wastewater valorization for the production of biosurfactants: surfactin, rhamnolipids, and mannosileritritol lipids

Vanessa Kristine de Oliveira Schmidt et al.

Summary: The global production of cassava is approximately 303 million tons, which results in the generation of 0.65 kg of solid residue and 25.3 l of wastewater per kg of processed cassava root. The composition of the wastewater varies depending on its source, with cassava flour production exhibiting higher levels of organic load and total cyanide compared to starch processing. The presence of cyanide in cassava residues poses a toxicity risk to humans and animals. Developing eco-friendly methods for the treatment or reuse of cassava wastewater is a promising yet challenging endeavor. This study aims to explore the production of biosurfactants using cassava wastewater as an alternative culture medium.

Biosurfactant promoted enzymatic saccharification of alkali-pretreated reed straw

Xinyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper used five different types of biosurfactants to enhance the saccharification efficiency in the enzymatic hydrolysis process. The addition of sophorolipid increased the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency by 30.65%, while the combination of sophorolipid and tea saponin further increased the efficiency to 99.56%. These biosurfactants acted synergistically to inhibit enzymatic inactivation and non-productive adsorption of lignin. This study proposes an effective method to improve enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency and reduce enzyme dosage by utilizing biosurfactants.

The effect of pH/PAC on the coagulation of anionic surfactant wastewater generated in the cosmetic production

Lanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study discussed the effects of adjusting the pH value of raw wastewater on the removal efficiencies of pollutants, dissolved organic matter, and sludge morphology. It also studied the changes of coagulation performance and group structure and thermal stability of flocculated sludge under the coupling action of pH/polyaluminum chloride (PAC). The results showed that adjusting the pH of raw wastewater could promote the removal efficiencies of COD and LAS and enhance the conductivity of actual cosmetic wastewater, but could not remove aromatic proteins. The highest coagulation efficiency was achieved under PAC concentration of 2.6 g/L and pH value of 6, and medium molecular weight organics were mainly removed.
