Fatemeh Razavirad et al.

Summary: Nanofluid flooding as a new technique for enhancing oil recovery has gained significant attention in recent times. This study investigates the performance of a novel iron-carbon nanohybrid in enhancing oil recovery. The experiments and analysis reveal that this nanohybrid can improve the efficiency of oil displacement in oil wells, primarily through wettability alteration and micro-dispersion formation.

Bio-polymer modified nanoclay embedded forward osmosis membranes with enhanced desalination performance

Stanley Chinedu Mamah et al.

Summary: The substrate of forward osmosis (FO) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes plays a crucial role in the formation of the selective layer. Improving the substrate's thickness, tortuosity, and porosity can further enhance the properties of TFC membranes. In this study, a TFC membrane with a polyamide selective layer and a palygorskite-chitin (PAL-CH) embedded polysulfone substrate was developed for FO desalination. The inclusion of PAL-CH resulted in improved water flux and reduced structural parameter, leading to a 110% increase in water recovery compared to pristine membranes.

Summary: This article provides a critical review on the surface modification of nanoparticles (NPs) to improve oil recovery mechanisms. The surface modification of NPs can be classified into in-situ surface modification and post-synthesis surface modification, with various techniques developed based on surface affinity for different chemical groups. It is found that functionalized NPs have excellent stability and rheological properties, and their applications in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) are reviewed.

Improving stability of iron oxide nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery: Exploiting wettability modifications in carbonaceous rocks

Sergio H. Toma et al.

Summary: In this article, the authors present a comprehensive characterization of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) modified with the HBS ligand, showing improved colloidal stability in nanofluids for advanced oil recovery. The chemical modification of the particles' surface by the HBS ligand was demonstrated, and the anionic groups on the surface of SPION-HBS nanoparticles improved their stability and interfacial properties in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) application. The SPION-HBS nanofluid exhibited higher oil production, attributed to the more efficient change in wettability due to the electrostatic interactions between the sulfonate groups and the porous surface of limestone rock.

Summary: The novel concept of using nanoparticles to enhance oil recovery and reduce trapped oil in hydrocarbon reservoirs is being explored. This study investigates the use of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for reducing interfacial tension and altering wettability under different salinity and temperature conditions. The results show that HAP nanoparticles are effective in improving these properties in both low and high salinity environments.

Experimental investigation of silica nanoparticle assisted Surfactant and polymer systems for enhanced oil recovery

Dinesh Joshi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of silica nanoparticles, surfactants, and polymers in enhancing oil recovery from oil fields. The synergy of these components is shown to reduce interfacial tension, alter wettability, emulsify, and improve viscosity. Core flooding experiments demonstrate that the nanofluid system provides higher incremental oil recovery, particularly in high permeability cores. Different mechanisms, including wettability alteration and pore plugging, contribute to the increased recovery. This research provides valuable insights into the application of silica nanoparticles with surfactants and polymers as chemical enhanced oil recovery agents.
