End-capped modification of dithienosilole based small donor molecules for high performance organic solar cells using DFT approach

Benzothiadiazole-based non-fullerene acceptors

Summary: The power conversion efficiencies of organic solar cells have been greatly improved with the rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors in recent years, especially using benzothiadiazole as an important electron-accepting unit. By judicious molecular engineering, the optoelectronic properties of BT-based small molecules can be efficiently modulated to achieve high-efficiency photovoltaic devices. The highest PCE reached up to 18% due to the emergence of fused-BT-based molecule Y6, which has promoted the rapid progress of OSCs since 2019.

Ultrafast Kinetics Investigation of a Fluorinated-Benzothiadiazole Polymer with an Increased Excited State Transition Dipole Moment Applied in Organic Solar Cells

Summary: The fluorination of polymer donors has been widely applied in organic solar cells (OSCs) to improve performance. The fluorinated polymer PDTBDT-SFBTEH showed a remarkable enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to non-fluorinated counterparts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that fluorination enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect and promoted charge separation at the donor/acceptor interface. Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy measurements also supported the faster electron injection and exciton separation of fluorinated polymer donors.
