From glycerol production to its value-added uses: A critical review

Zahra Pirzadi et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the production and purification processes of glycerol, as well as its applications in reforming technology. The mechanisms, thermodynamics, and optimal conditions for reactions are described, along with the development of main reforming catalysts. The effect of catalyst preparation and feed composition on the performance of the catalyst is also discussed.

Ce-doped cobalt aluminate catalysts for the glycerol hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) with in-situ produced hydrogen

A. J. Reynoso et al.

Summary: In this study, Ce-doped CoAl2O4 catalysts were synthesized by coprecipitation for the hydrodeoxygenation of glycerol with in-situ produced H-2 via aqueous-phase reforming. The results showed that Ce doping increased the selectivity and yield, as well as the population and strength of acid centers.

Activated carbon-based electrodes for two-steps catalytic/ electrocatalytic reduction of glycerol in Amberlyst-15 mediator

Siti Aqilah Nadhirah Md Rahim et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon-based electrodes with Amberlyst-15 as the redox mediator were used to indirectly convert glycerol into 1,2-propanediol. The results showed that the activated carbon content in the electrodes plays a significant role in the electrochemical properties and selectivity of the yielded products.

Unraveling Unique Surface Chemistry of Transition Metal Nitrides in Controlling Selective C-O Bond Scission Pathways of Glycerol

Zhexi Lin et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the surface science of Mo2N and Cu/Mo2N catalysts in the selective hydrodeoxygenation of glycerol. The experiments and calculations reveal that Mo2N can cleave two or three C-O bonds of glycerol, while the addition of Cu changes the reaction pathway to one C-O bond scission. The study also demonstrates that the interaction between the surface N of Mo2N and the H atoms in glycerol enables selective C-O bond scission.
