Organophosphate pesticide residues in environmental and biological matrices: Occurrence, distribution and potential remedial approaches

Odunayo T. Ore et al.

Summary: The prevalent occurrence of organophosphate pesticides in the environment has severe adverse impacts on environmental matrices and humans due to bioaccumulation and direct exposure. Despite regulatory interventions, these pesticides are still found in human blood, soil, water, and air. Therefore, conventional and newly developed methods are needed for comprehensive mitigation. The agricultural application is the main source, and neurotoxic effects on humans cannot be ignored. Adequate measures to regulate storage and usage, as well as development of eco-friendly approaches, are recommended.

Performance and interactions of diclofenac adsorption using Alginate/ Carbon-based Films: Experimental investigation and statistical physics modelling

Muhamad Sharafee Shamsudin et al.

Summary: The novel alginate/carbon films (AC-films) showed promising potential as an adsorbent for the removal of diclofenac (DCF) in water treatment. The adsorption performance was influenced by temperature and solution pH, with maximum adsorption achieved at pH 3 and 303 K. Statistical physics calculations helped analyze the adsorption mechanism and the thermodynamic calculations confirmed an exothermic and spontaneous adsorption process for DCF on AC-films.

Selective Adsorption of Aqueous Diclofenac Sodium, Naproxen Sodium, and Ibuprofen Using a Stable Fe3O4-FeBTC Metal-Organic Framework

Aldo Arturo Castaneda Ramirez et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel material, FeBTC metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporated with magnetite, for solving water contamination issues with last generation pollutants. The material showed increased adsorption capacity by adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and interactions such as electrostatic interaction, H-bonding, and competitive adsorption played vital roles in drug adsorption. The study demonstrated how superficial modification with a low-surface-area MOF can achieve significant adsorption results in water pollutants.

Carbon-mediated visible-light clay-Fe2O3-graphene oxide catalytic nanocomposites for the removal of steroid estrogens from water

Ajibola A. Bayode et al.

Summary: This study reported the development of efficient photosensitive nanocomposites made from clay, Fe2O3, and graphene oxide (GO) for the removal of steroid estrogens from water under visible-light. The main contributors to the photocatalytic efficiency of these nanocomposites are superoxide radicals and holes. The photocatalysts remain active under competitive conditions, with a slight decrease in estrogen oxidation efficiency.

Tuning ZnO/GO p-n heterostructure with carbon interlayer supported on clay for visible-light catalysis: Removal of steroid estrogens from water

Ajibola A. Bayode et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficiency of a new visible-light p-n ZnO/GO heterostructured composite catalyst supported on clay with carbon interlayer for the removal of four steroid estrogens in water. The presence of carbon interlayer and graphene oxide were crucial for the visible-light efficiency of the photocatalyst, achieving >89% estrogen removal. Analysis confirmed the formation of hydroxyl radicals responsible for photodegradation of estrogens in the presence of the photocatalytic composite.
