Anaerobic Degradation of the Invasive Weed Solidago canadensis L. (goldenrod) and Copper Immobilization by a Community of Sulfate-Reducing and Methane-Producing Bacteria

Olesia Havryliuk et al.

Summary: The weed Solidago canadensis L. poses a global threat to the environment as it spreads uncontrollably on roadsides, in forests, fields, meadows, and farmland. Goldenrod emits toxic substances that suppress other plants and quickly conquer large areas. However, many scientists consider goldenrod as a valuable source of biologically active substances. In this study, Solidago plants were used as a substrate for methane gas production and copper detoxification.

Phytoremediation of copper-contaminated soil by Artemisia absinthium: comparative effect of chelating agents

Karen A. Ghazaryan et al.

Summary: The study found that Artemisia absinthium is well-adapted to growing in copper-contaminated soils and plant growth in contaminated soil can be restored using ammonium nitrate. The plant can accumulate high levels of copper in its roots without transferring this metal to the above-ground part, making it suitable for remediation without chelating agents. For phytoextraction, chemical amendments are needed to enhance copper bioavailability and transport it to the above-ground parts, with the combination of NH4NO3, citric acid, and malic acid being the most effective approach.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution in cultivated land poses a serious threat to environmental health and farmers' livelihoods. Understanding farmers' adaptive behavior to heavy metal pollution and its influencing factors is important for decision-making. The data from a mining area in China show that local farmers perceive the hazards of heavy metal pollution, but their adaptive behaviors are hindered to some extent. Perceptions of health impact, self-efficacy, and adaptive cost play a partial mediating role in the impact of characteristics on adaptive behaviors.
