Mechanistic insight on boron-mediated toxicity in plant vis-a-vis its mitigation strategies: a review

Biswaranjan Behera et al.

Summary: This review investigates the physio-biochemical and molecular responses and mechanism of boron (B) uptake under its toxic condition. It also analyzes the spatial distribution and accumulation of B in plants regulated by sugar alcohols (polyols) and provides management strategies to alleviate B toxicity. The study highlights the narrow range between essential and toxic levels of B in plants and the symptoms that occur with slight changes in B concentration in soil. It discusses the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of plants to B toxicity, including impaired growth, chlorosis, and disruption of various systems in the plant.

Summary: In this study, the response of two local maize landraces from Tacna, Peru, to boron toxicity was analyzed. The results showed that Sama had lower soluble boron content in its leaves and roots compared to Pachia under high boron concentrations, which was attributed to its higher expression levels of boron efflux transporters. As a result, Sama exhibited reduced leaf damage and higher photosynthetic and growth parameters under boron toxicity conditions.

Genome-Wide Identification and Functional Analysis of Polyamine Oxidase Genes in Maize Reveal Essential Roles in Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Yan Xi et al.

Summary: Polyamine oxidase (PAO) genes were systematically characterized in maize for the first time, resulting in the identification of nine ZmPAO genes. Expression analysis and transgenic experiments demonstrated the crucial roles of ZmPAO6 gene in enhancing heat tolerance and reducing oxidative damage in plants. These findings provide important insights into the function and regulatory mechanisms of ZmPAO genes in growth, development, and adaptation to abiotic stresses in maize.

Insight into the Root Transcriptome of a Boron-Tolerant Triticum zhukovskyi Genotype Grown under Boron Toxicity

Anamika Pandey et al.

Summary: Boron (B) toxicity is a significant abiotic stress that detrimentally affects agriculture, particularly in arid areas. This study investigated the transcriptomic response of a B-toxicity-tolerant Triticum zhukovskyi genotype to high B levels. The findings revealed differentially expressed genes, transcription factors, and pathways associated with the response to B toxicity, offering potential candidate genes for future breeding programs.

Role of proteases in the response of plants to drought

Sebastian D'Ippolito et al.

Summary: Proteases in plants play crucial roles in response to drought stress, involving regulation of stomatal development, phytohormone crosstalk, and modulation of stomatal aperture, as well as mitigation of reactive oxygen species production. Despite proposed roles, the molecular mechanisms regulating these functions remain unknown. This review summarizes the current understanding of protease participation in plant signaling pathways under water deficit conditions and their impact on plant stress tolerance.

The Significance of Chloroplast NAD(P)H Dehydrogenase Complex and Its Dependent Cyclic Electron Transport in Photosynthesis

Mingzhu Ma et al.

Summary: The Chloroplast NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (NDH) complex, an important alternative electron transport pathway, plays a crucial role in maintaining the redox system balance in plants and providing extra ATP for biochemical reactions. Understanding NDH-mediated cyclic electron transport during photosynthesis may lead to improved crop yield by aiding plants in adapting to environmental stress.

Response to Application and Tissue Diagnosis of Boron Deficiency and Toxicity in Maize

Lenir Fatima Gotz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effect of doses and application times of boron on maize yield, finding that different application times and doses had varied impacts on boron content. Higher boron content in the leaves was observed when applied at the V6 growth stage, but this was influenced by rainfall.
