Terpene Production Varies in Pinus thunbergii Parl. with Different Levels of Resistance, with Potential Effects on Pinewood Nematode Behavior

Xin-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences in resistance to pine wood nematodes among different Pinus thunbergii parl. lines and the role of volatile organic substances (VOS) in pine wilt disease (PWD) resistance. The results show that the expression levels of terpene synthesis-related genes and the types and content of terpenoids differ between resistant and susceptible P. thunbergii, leading to significant inhibition of nematode growth and migration in resistant plants.

Characterization of Volatile Compounds from Tea Plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) and the Effect of Identified Compounds on Empoasca flavescens Behavior

Fani Fauziah et al.

Summary: The tea green leafhopper is a major pest of tea plants, and controlling it with pesticides can lead to high levels of toxic residues. This study explores the influence of volatile compounds on the resistance of tea plants, and identifies certain compounds that play important roles in resistance and susceptibility.

Insights into the Intraspecific Variability of the above and Belowground Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds in Tomato

Nafissa Dehimeche et al.

Summary: The study showed that there is high genetic variability in the constitutive volatile organic compound emissions from tomato plants under stress-free conditions, with significant differences in emission composition and quantity among genotypes. Foliage emissions were found to be low and partly light-dependent, while soil emissions were characterized by terpenes, oxygenated alkanes, and alkenes and phenolic compounds. The correlation analyses indicated that certain VOCs emitted from foliage or soil are jointly regulated, suggesting interconnected sources above and belowground.

Identification of Volatile Compounds in Blackcurrant Berries: Differences among Cultivars

Sandy Pages-Helary et al.

Summary: Blackcurrant berries are known for their strong flavor, with different cultivars having specific profiles of volatile compounds. The Noir de Bourgogne cultivar is particularly important in the Burgundy region of France, as it is the main ingredient in a liquor with a designation of origin. Analysis of volatile fractions in berries from 15 cultivars showed unique characteristics for each cultivar, with the Noir de Bourgogne cultivar having the highest amounts of certain molecules. None of the studied varieties were similar to the Noir de Bourgogne based on VOC analysis.

Citrus Varieties with Different Tolerance Grades to Tristeza Virus Show Dissimilar Volatile Terpene Profiles

Salvatore Guarino et al.

Summary: Plants, especially citrus species, produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with diverse biological functions, which can be associated with the susceptibility/tolerance towards Tristeza virus (CTV). Analyses of VOCs emitted and sequestered in the leaves of CTV-susceptible and CTV-tolerant citrus varieties revealed qualitative and quantitative differences, with tolerant varieties showing higher presence of monoterpene compounds known to have deterrent properties against viruses. The findings suggest potential implications for tolerance to CTV and related vectors based on differences in VOC profiles.
