Dedicated farnesyl diphosphate synthases circumvent isoprenoid-derived growth-defense tradeoffs in Zea mays

Hoang Tang et al.

Summary: Zea mays produces high levels of zealexins, an important defense compound, without negatively affecting its growth by partitioning the production of farnesyl diphosphate, the precursor for zealexins, between different farnesyl diphosphate synthases. Specifically, FPS3 is responsible for zealexin production, while FPS1 is responsible for the production of the essential respiratory co-factor ubiquinone.

Bioactive diterpenoids impact the composition of the root-associated microbiome in maize (Zea mays)

Katherine M. Murphy et al.

Summary: This study found that maize diterpenoid metabolites, especially dolabralexins, influence rhizosphere bacterial communities. The rhizosphere microbiome of the wild-type and dolabralexin-deficient mutant Zman2 differed significantly, with the most significant changes observed in Alphaproteobacteria of the order Sphingomonadales. Metabolomics analyses support that these differences are attributed to the diterpenoid deficiency of the Zman2 mutant, rather than other large-scale metabolome alterations.

Comparative analyses of responses to exogenous and endogenous antiherbivore elicitors enable a forward genetics approach to identify maize gene candidates mediating sensitivity to herbivore-associated molecular patterns

Elly Poretsky et al.

Summary: The study compared the responses of maize to Pep and FAC, revealing both similarities in signaling pathways and differences in reactions across different inbred lines. A candidate gene associated with FAC sensitivity, ZmFACS, was identified and shown to play a significant role in the response.

Getting back to the grass roots: harnessing specialized metabolites for improved crop stress resilience

Yezhang Ding et al.

Summary: Roots play a crucial role in plant productivity, but our understanding of the chemical language mediating key interactions through root specialized metabolites remains limited. Advances in plant genome assembly and metabolomics are enabling large-scale discoveries of specialized metabolic pathways for regulating root-biotic interactions.
