Bactrocera dorsalis in the Indian Ocean: A tale of two invasions

Pablo Deschepper et al.

Summary: By using genome-wide SNP data and multiple methods, we uncovered the invasion pathways of Bactrocera dorsalis into the Indian Ocean islands. There were two independent invasion routes: a western route from East Africa through Comoros into Madagascar, and a direct route from Asia to the Mascarene islands. The findings highlight the importance of phytosanitary regulations to prevent the further spread of B. dorsalis.

Population genomic insights into invasion success in a polyphagous agricultural pest, Halyomorpha halys

Elahe Parvizi et al.

Summary: Invasive species such as the brown marmorated stink bug pose a threat to ecosystems and agriculture due to their rapid adaptation and expansion. This study reveals the genomic mechanisms behind the global invasion success of the brown marmorated stink bug. The findings suggest a complex invasion scenario with multiple bridgehead events, and highlight the potential for the evolution of insecticide resistance. The study emphasizes the need for sustainable and targeted management strategies.

Genome-wide signatures of the geographic expansion and breeding of soybean

Ying-Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genome sequences of soybeans and revealed the evolutionary history and domestication process of soybean. The expansion and breeding of soybean were accompanied by positive selection of flowering time genes, and genetic introgression in soybean landraces mostly derived from sympatric wild populations.

Traces of Genetic but Not Epigenetic Adaptation in the Invasive Goldenrod Solidago canadensis Despite the Absence of Population Structure

Silvia Eckert et al.

Summary: The invasive goldenrod in Central Europe, Solidago canadensis, shows genetic adaptation along a large-scale latitudinal gradient, but lacks epigenetic adaptation. Genetic and epigenetic diversity are correlated and potentially responsive to selection processes.

Bridgehead effect and multiple introductions shape the global invasion history of a termite

Alexander J. Blumenfeld et al.

Summary: The study reveals a complex invasion history of the Formosan subterranean termite, with multiple introductions from different regions in China shaping its global distribution. The Hawaiian population acted as a bridgehead for the introduction to the southeastern US, illustrating the pivotal role of bridgeheads in species distributions. Multiple introductions may have prevented and possibly reversed the loss of genetic diversity within the invasive range of the termite.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
