Biological Activity of Essential Oils of Four Juniper Species and Their Potential as Biopesticides

Ivanka Semerdjieva et al.

Summary: This study assessed the biological activity of essential oils from four Juniperus species obtained through different distillation methods. The results show that plant sex can affect the composition and content of the oils, leading to differences in bioactivity. All tested oils demonstrated significant repellent and insecticidal activity against aphids.

Content variability of bioactive secondary metabolites in Hypericum perforatum L.

Alessandra Carrubba et al.

Summary: St John's Wort is a perennial medicinal herb widely used in the Mediterranean basin, containing bioactive compounds such as naphthodianthrones, phloroglucinols, and polyphenols. Variability in its phytochemical composition is influenced by factors like genotype, geographical origin, and harvesting stage. A study evaluating the stability of bioactive compounds over cultivation years and genotypes found significant effects of year and provenance on metabolites, with different responses to climatic variability observed among genotypes.

Prolonged sublethal effects of essential oils from non-wood parts of nine conifers on key insect pests and vectors

Roman Pavela et al.

Summary: Conifers are economically important due to their various uses, while their twigs produce essential oils with insecticidal potential. Among nine conifer species evaluated, essential oils from x C. leylandii, P. abies, and P. sylvestris showed the highest insecticidal activity, impacting the longevity, development, and vitality of target insects.
