Salicylic Acid's Impact on Growth, Photosynthesis, and Antioxidant Enzyme Activity of Triticum aestivum When Exposed to Salt

Pravej Alam et al.

Summary: Recently, the use of salicylic acid (SA) to enhance plant resistance to abiotic stresses has become more prevalent. Global salt stress severely affects 2.1% of irrigated land (19.5% of total land). Wheat (Triticum aestivum) production in 2020 reached 761 million tons, making it the second most produced cereal after maize. The application of SA significantly increased photosynthetic attributes and antioxidant enzyme activity while interacting with meristematic cells. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of SA in wheat plants under stress.

Additive Effect of the Composition of Endophytic Bacteria Bacillus subtilis on Systemic Resistance of Wheat against Greenbug Aphid Schizaphis graminum Due to Lipopeptides

Sergey D. Rumyantsev et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanisms of two endophytic strains of B.subtilis on the resistance of wheat against greenbug aphids were investigated. It was found that these strains and their lipopeptide-rich fractions exhibited direct aphicidal activity and influenced plant redox metabolism, leading to increased plant endurance against aphids. The combination of B.subtilis 26D and B.subtilis 11VM showed an additive effect on plant resistance due to an increase in endophytic bacterial cells and the synergistic effect of their lipopeptide mixture. This research highlights the potential of using endophytic bacteria to enhance plant resistance to phloem-feeding insects and discover green pesticides.

Transcriptome and Proteomics Analysis of Wheat Seedling Roots Reveals That Increasing NH4+/NO3- Ratio Induced Root Lignification and Reduced Nitrogen Utilization

Dongqing Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of wheat seedling roots to changes in NH4+/NO3- ratio and found that high NH4+/NO3- ratio led to decreased growth and photosynthetic capacity, as well as increased reactive oxygen species production in the roots. Transcriptome and proteome analysis identified pathways involved in glutathione metabolism and lignin biosynthesis as key players in the response to NH4+/NO3- ratio changes. Increasing the NH4+/NO3- ratio induced the expression of genes and proteins involved in lignin biosynthesis, leading to increased root lignin content. Additionally, the study found that high NH4+/NO3- ratio reduced nitrate uptake but increased ammonium uptake in the roots.

Comparative Analysis of Physiological, Hormonal and Transcriptomic Responses Reveal Mechanisms of Saline-Alkali Tolerance in Autotetraploid Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Chunying Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of enhanced saline-alkali tolerance in autotetraploid rice relative to diploid rice. Physiologically, autotetraploid rice showed higher accumulation of soluble sugar and stronger activities of SOD and POD in leaves after saline-alkali shock. Hormone levels in the leaves of autotetraploid rice also changed significantly. Transcriptomic profiling revealed more upregulated DEGs in leaves and roots of autotetraploid rice, with a higher abundance of DEGs in roots under saline-alkali stress. Genes related to phytohormone signal transduction, lignin biosynthesis, and wax biosynthesis were upregulated in autotetraploid rice under saline-alkali condition.

A Pathogenesis-Related Protein-Like Gene Is Involved in the Panax notoginseng Defense Response to the Root Rot Pathogen

Shan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a gene encoding a PR-like protein (PnPR-like) was isolated from Panax notoginseng, which is responsive to an infection by Fusarium solani. The recombinant PnPR-like protein expressed in Escherichia coli showed antifungal effects and inhibited the spore germination of F. solani. The stable expression of PnPR-like in transgenic tobacco plants increased RNase activity and disease resistance. This study highlights the importance of PnPR-like protein in defense response against F. solani in Panax notoginseng.
