Kernel Smut and False Smut: The Old-Emerging Diseases of Rice-A Review

Sabin Khanal et al.

Summary: Kernel smut, caused by Tilletia horrida, and rice false smut, caused by Ustilaginoidea virens, are two economically important diseases in rice. The increased use of susceptible rice cultivars, excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer, and short crop rotations have led to an increase in both diseases, causing significant losses in grain yield and quality. This article provides a review of the distribution, economic importance, taxonomy, biology, epidemiology, and management strategies of kernel smut and false smut of rice.

High-resolution mapping of the quantitative trait locus (QTLs) conferring resistance to false smut disease in rice

Kumari Neelam et al.

Summary: In this study, QTLs for rice false smut (RFS) resistance were mapped from a resistant breeding line, with a total of 7 QTLs identified on rice chromosomes. Among these, a novel QTL on chromosome 9 showed the largest phenotypic effect, and putative candidate genes within this QTL were predicted to be nucleotide-binding sites-leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR) domain-containing disease resistance proteins. This marks a hotspot region on rice chromosomes carrying genes/QTLs for resistance to RFS disease.

A secreted fungal effector suppresses rice immunity through host histone hypoacetylation

Xiaoyang Chen et al.

Summary: The secreted protein UvSec117 from the rice false smut fungus was found to directly target the rice histone deacetylase OsHDA701, reducing rice immune response and interfering with defense gene activation. Inhibiting the expression of UvSec117 gene can enhance rice resistance against false smut.

Phosphorylation of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase AHA2 by BAK1 is required for ABA-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis

Dan Pei et al.

Summary: Stomatal opening is promoted by light-activated plasma membrane-localized proton ATPases (PM H+ -ATPases), while their closure is modulated by abscisic acid (ABA) signaling during drought stress. This study demonstrates that AHA2, a major PM H+ -ATPase isoform, is activated by BAK1 through phosphorylation and plays a crucial role in ABA-induced stomatal closure. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying stomatal regulation during drought stress in plants.

NLR we there yet? Nucleocytoplasmic coordination of NLR-mediated immunity

Daniel Luedke et al.

Summary: This article discusses the role of nucleoporins and nuclear transport receptors (NTRs) in plant immunity, with a focus on NLR immune signaling across the nuclear compartment boundary and within the nucleus. The authors also highlight the cytoplasmic and nuclear functions of NLRs and their signaling partners, as well as the potential implications of NLR activation and resistosome formation in both cellular compartments for mediating plant pathogen resistance and programmed host cell death.

Ustilaginoidea virens secretes a family of phosphatases that stabilize the negative immune regulator OsMPK6 and suppress plant immunity

Xinhang Zheng et al.

Summary: The small secreted cysteine-rich effector 6 in Ustilaginoidea virens is a novel MAP kinase tyrosine phosphatase that suppresses rice immunity by interacting with and dephosphorylating OsMPK6, leading to enhanced pathogen infection. This study reveals a previously unidentified fungal infection strategy.

Overproduction of OsRACK1A, an effector- targeted scaffold protein promoting OsRBOHB- mediated ROS production, confers rice floral resistance to false smut disease without yield penalty

Guo-Bang Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the molecular mechanism of Ustilaginoidea virens, a flower-specific pathogen, in infecting rice flowers. It is found that UvCBP1, a cytoplasmic effector secreted by U. virens, interacts with the rice scaffold protein OsRACK1A and inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by competing its interaction with OsRBOHB. Additionally, the expression levels of OsRACK1A are correlated with field resistance against U. virens in rice germplasm.

SH3P2, an SH3 domain-containing protein that interacts with both Pib and AvrPib, suppresses effector-triggered, Pib-mediated immunity in rice

Yunjie Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigated the mechanism of the blast disease resistance gene Pib in rice. They discovered that an SH3 domain-containing protein, SH3P2, interacts with Pib, leading to the inactivation of Pib under normal growth conditions. However, when the pathogen carrying AvrPib invades, SH3P2 dissociates from Pib, activating Pib-mediated resistance. This finding provides new insights into the plant defense mechanism.

Summary: The xb24 gene in rice plays an important role in immune responses against Ustilaginoidea virens and Magnaporthe oryzae. The interaction between SnRK1A and XB24 enhances ATPase activity, contributing to plant disease resistance. The study reveals a novel molecular strategy used by U. virens to promote infection.
