Use of Copper-Based Fungicides in Organic Agriculture in Twelve European Countries

Lucius Tamm et al.

Summary: The reduction and eventual phasing out of copper-based plant-protection products is a top priority in European policy and organic agriculture. A survey was conducted to provide an overview of the current use of these products in European organic agriculture and the need for alternatives. The survey combined expert knowledge and statistics on pesticide use to estimate the consumption of copper in organic agriculture in 12 European countries. The results showed that approximately 3258 t of copper is consumed per year, which is 52% of the permitted annual dosage. The main crops contributing to this consumption are olives, grapevine, and almonds. More than half of the allowed cases involve farmers using less than half of the permitted amount. Completely abandoning copper fungicides at present would result in significant yield losses. To reduce or avoid copper use, preventive strategies need to be fully implemented, breeding programs intensified, and affordable alternative products brought to the market.

Untargeted metabolomic profiling of fresh and dried leaf extracts of young and mature Eucalyptus globulus trees indicates differences in the presence of specialized metabolites

Mafalda Pinto et al.

Summary: Aqueous extracts from Eucalyptus globulus leaves contain a wide variety of specialized metabolites with diverse biological activities. Previous studies have mainly focused on extracts from mature leaves, while the composition of extracts from young eucalyptus leaves is still unclear. There is also no consensus on whether fresh or dried leaves should be used for extraction to obtain the highest recovery of biologically active compounds.

The Array of Antibacterial Action of Protocatechuic Acid Ethyl Ester and Erythromycin on Staphylococcal Strains

Maria Miklasinska-Majdanik et al.

Summary: The spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant staphylococcal strains, poses a major health problem worldwide. The combination of natural compounds and antibiotics can be an alternative approach to combat multi-drug-resistant pathogen infections. The study found that the antibacterial activity of the protocatechuic acid ethyl ester-erythromycin combination varied depending on the resistance profiles of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains, with multi-drug-resistant strains showing increased sensitivity to the cooperative action of the natural compound and the antibiotic.

Terpenes as bacterial efflux pump inhibitors: A systematic review

Kaio Jefte Santos De Oliveira Dias et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of terpenes as bacterial efflux pump inhibitors. Through systematic search and analysis of published manuscripts, it is found that terpenes have significant inhibitory effects on efflux pumps in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains.

A Synergic Potential of Antimicrobial Peptides against Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae

Nuno Mariz-Ponte et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is the pathogen responsible for bacterial canker of kiwifruit, causing significant production losses. Despite the lack of effective treatments for this disease, this study found that BP100 and CA-M have strong inhibitory and bactericidal effects against Psa, with peptide 3.1 showing faster membrane permeation. Additionally, the mixture of AMPs BP100:3.1 demonstrated high efficiency in reducing Psa viability at low concentrations.

A Review of the Most Common and Economically Important Diseases That Undermine the Cultivation of Tomato Crop in the Mediterranean Basin

Stefano Panno et al.

Summary: Tomato has become one of the most important horticultural crops grown extensively in the Mediterranean region and worldwide in the past fifty years, with over 180 million tonnes produced globally in 2019. Effective management of the numerous tomato pathogens requires understanding of symptoms, distribution, and early detection methods, along with consideration of genetic properties, climate changes, control measures, and globalization of the seed industry.

A centenary for bacterial spot of tomato and pepper

Ebrahim Osdaghi et al.

Summary: The disease symptoms include water-soaked areas, chlorosis, and necrotic spots on plants, with host range mainly on tomatoes and peppers. The pathogen belongs to Xanthomonas genus and has synonyms like Bacterium vesicatorium, with gram-negative colonies found in general culture media. It is widespread in Africa, Brazil, Canada, the USA, Australia, eastern Europe, and south-east Asia.
