Anti-Diabetes, Anti-Gout, and Anti-Leukemia Properties of Essential Oils from Natural Spices Clausena indica, Zanthoxylum rhetsa, and Michelia tonkinensis

Nguyen Van Quan et al.

Summary: Essential oils from Clausena indica, Zanthoxylum rhetsa, and Michelia tonkinensis fruits and seeds have been found to possess anti-diabetes, anti-gout, and anti-leukemia properties. The oils from Clausena indica exhibited inhibition of key enzymes related to diabetes and gout, while the oils from Zanthoxylum rhetsa and Michelia tonkinensis showed stronger anti-diabetic effects than the known anti-diabetic agent acarbose. Additionally, all the oils suppressed the growth of leukemia cells.

Synergistics of Carboxymethyl Chitosan and Mangosteen Extract as Enhancing Moisturizing, Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Deodorizing Properties in Emulsion Cream

Nareekan Chaiwong et al.

Summary: Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH) was synthesized from native chitosan to improve water solubility. The high-molecular-weight carboxymethyl chitosan (H-CMCH) had higher water solubility than native chitosan. H-CMCH was evaluated as an enhancing moisturizer in mangosteen extract deodorant cream, and it showed potential in enhancing skin moisturizing, deodorizing activity, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properties.

Essential Oils and Their Major Components: An Updated Review on Antimicrobial Activities, Mechanism of Action and Their Potential Application in the Food Industry

Manasweeta Angane et al.

Summary: Essential oils (EOs) can be considered as a natural food-grade preservative alternative, as they are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and have shown potential to inhibit the proliferation of food-borne pathogens. However, their antibacterial activity differs between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and their application at a commercial scale is limited due to flavor and odor concerns. Further research is needed to develop strategies for industrial-scale application.

Isolation of endophytic fungi with antimicrobial activity from medicinal plant Zanthoxylum simulans Hance

Jimmy Kuo et al.

Summary: Fungal endophytes with antimicrobial activity were isolated from Zanthoxylum simulans, a popular spice and medicinal plant. The study found differences in the number and composition of antimicrobial species between summer and winter, indicating a diverse community of endophytic fungi in Z. simulans that varies seasonally. These endophytes could potentially provide a source for natural antibiotics to protect their plant hosts against pathogens.
