Melatonin Improves Drought Stress Tolerance of Tomato by Modulating Plant Growth, Root Architecture, Photosynthesis, and Antioxidant Defense System

Muhammad Ahsan Altaf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the defensive role of melatonin (ME) in tomato seedlings under drought stress and finds that ME can improve drought tolerance, enhance growth and photosynthesis, and strengthen antioxidant mechanisms to reduce oxidative damage.

Overexpression of the Polygonum cuspidatum PcDREB2A Gene Encoding a DRE-Binding Transcription Factor Enhances the Drought Tolerance of Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana

Hongyan Hu et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved complex signaling networks to adapt to adverse environmental conditions. PcDREB2A, a novel DREB transcription factor gene identified from Polygonum cuspidatum, plays a crucial role in plant responses to abiotic stresses. Overexpression of PcDREB2A in Arabidopsis thaliana resulted in increased drought tolerance and improved growth performance.

Root Endophytic Fungi Regulate Changes in Sugar and Medicinal Compositions of Polygonum cuspidatum

Rui-Ting Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Funneliformis mosseae (Fm) and Piriformospora indica (Pi) on the growth, root morphology, sugar concentrations, and secondary metabolite concentrations of Polygonum cuspidatum. The results showed that Fm and Pi promoted plant growth and increased the production of certain secondary metabolites. The combination of Fm and Pi had a better effect on secondary metabolite production compared to single inoculation.

Endophytic Fungi Accelerate Leaf Physiological Activity and Resveratrol Accumulation in Polygonum cuspidatum by Up-Regulating Expression of Associated Genes

Rui-Ting Sun et al.

Summary: Inoculation with root endophytic fungi, especially Piriformospora indica, significantly promoted biomass production, physiological activities, and medicinal ingredient accumulation in Polygonum cuspidatum. The application of endophytic fungi increased resveratrol and polydatin concentrations, while affecting other compound concentrations in a complex manner.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and phosphorus supply accelerate main medicinal component production of Polygonum cuspidatum

Rui-Ting Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that under 0.2M phosphorus supply, inoculation with F. mosseae significantly improved the growth performance and root morphology of P. cuspidatum, regardless of substrate phosphorus levels. In addition, phosphorus supply and F. mosseae inoculation also significantly increased soil acid and neutral phosphatase activities, as well as root phosphorus concentrations.

The Effect of Foliar Application of Melatonin on Changes in Secondary Metabolite Contents in Two Citrus Species Under Drought Stress Conditions

Marziyeh Jafari et al.

Summary: The study found that crops treated with melatonin under severe drought stress had higher levels of total flavonoids and total phenols. The highest level of essential oil components was observed in both citrus varieties with 100 μM foliar application of melatonin under severe drought stress.
