Morphophysiological, proteomic and metabolomic analyses reveal cadmium tolerance mechanism in common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Dazhong Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a threat to food security and human health by reducing wheat yield and quality. In this study, the mechanisms of Cd tolerance were investigated using two wheat cultivars, Luomai23 (LM, Cd-sensitive) and Zhongyu10 (ZY, Cd-tolerant). Cd inhibited wheat growth, caused oxidative stress, affected carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and altered root exudates. ZY showed lower root Cd concentration by about 35%, reduced Cd uptake through root exudation, and enhanced Cd cell wall fixation and vacuolar compartmentalization. ZY also exhibited increased resilience to Cd due to enhanced antioxidant capacity, plasma membrane stability, nitrogen metabolism, and endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis.

Illumina RNA and SMRT Sequencing Reveals the Mechanism of Uptake and Transformation of Selenium Nanoparticles in Soybean Seedlings

Yuzhou Xiong et al.

Summary: Selenium (Se) is essential for mammals, but its deficiency is a global problem. Agronomic biofortification through exogenous Se provides a valuable strategy to increase Se intake. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are considered to have higher bioavailability and less toxicity compared to selenite and selenate. However, little is known about the metabolism of SeNPs in plants. This study investigated the molecular mechanism of SeNPs metabolism in soybean sprouts using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing. The results revealed potential genes involved in SeNPs transport and biotransformation, and key hub genes related to SeNPs accumulation and tolerance in soybean were identified. A putative metabolism pathway of SeNPs in soybean was proposed. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for further understanding the mechanism of SeNPs metabolism in plants.

Hydrogen Peroxide is Involved in Salicylic Acid-Induced Adventitious Rooting in Cucumber Under Cadmium Stress

Wenting Gong et al.

Summary: The study revealed that under Cd stress, salicylic acid (SA) may play an important role in promoting adventitious root formation (ARF) in cucumber by enhancing endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels. Additionally, SA also affects pectin content and pectin methylesterification degree in cucumber plants under Cd stress.

Nanoselenium integrates soil-pepper plant homeostasis by recruiting rhizosphere-beneficial microbiomes and allocating signaling molecule levels under Cd stress

Dong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of nano-Se intervention on environmental variables, microorganisms, metabolic pathways, and Se and Cd morphology in rhizosphere soil and pepper plants. The results show that nano-Se application enhances soil enzymes and plant metabolites, boosts beneficial microorganisms, and reduces Cd accumulation in pepper plants.

Cadmium uptake and translocation: selenium and silicon roles in Cd detoxification for the production of low Cd crops: a critical review

Muhammad Riaz et al.

Summary: Cadmium is a major contaminant in agricultural soils worldwide, with varying abilities among different plant species and genotypes to uptake, transport, detoxify, and accumulate it. Strategies such as selenium and silicon applications have been suggested to decrease Cd toxicity, with mechanisms like vacuolar sequestration, formation of phytochelatins, and cell wall adsorption reported as effective for detoxification. This review discusses past and current literature to better understand Cd toxicity and its mitigation through different feasible and practical approaches.

Selenium nanoparticles ameliorate Brassica napus L. cadmium toxicity by inhibiting the respiratory burst and scavenging reactive oxygen species

Wen-Yu Qi et al.

Summary: Both selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and selenite (SeO32-) have a positive impact on the growth of Brassica napus L. under Cd stress conditions, by reducing oxidative damage and improving resistance mechanisms such as gene regulation and intracellular calcium homeostasis. SeNPs show a wider beneficial concentration range compared to SeO32-.
