Monitoring lipids profile, CO2 fixation, and water recyclability for the economic viability of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultivation at different initial nitrogen

Wasif Farooq et al.

Summary: This study investigates the economic viability of microalgae as a bioenergy source, identifying 6 mM initial nitrate as optimal for the growth and lipid productivity of Chlorella vulgaris. The CO2 fixation rate increases initially and peaks during exponential growth, while water produces higher total organic carbon at low nitrogen concentrations.

Differences in susceptibility to photoinhibition do not determine growth rate under moderate light in batch or turbidostat-a study with five green algae

H. Mattila et al.

Summary: The growth rates during batch and turbidostat modes varied independently of each other, indicating that a growth rate measured in a batch cannot be used to determine the continuous growth rate. Different photoinhibition susceptibilities in tested algae suggest different amounts of energy invested in repair. However, photoinhibition tolerance did not necessarily lead to a fast growth rate at a moderate light intensity.

Revealing the differential protein profiles behind the nitrogen use efficiency in popcorn (Zea mays var. everta)

Shahid Khan et al.

Summary: The proteomic profiles of two popcorn inbred lines with different nitrogen responsive traits were investigated, and differentially accumulated proteins (DAPs) were identified. The NUE and NUpE were higher in the N-efficient line and decreased under high nitrogen supply. DAPs related to energy and carbohydrate metabolism, ascorbate biosynthesis, and nitrogen metabolism were found to play important roles in NUE.

Genotype-by-Environment Interaction for Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Associated Traits in Potato

Baye Berihun Getahun et al.

Summary: Deciphering the genetic basis of complex traits like nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) requires understanding the genotype-by-environment (G x E) interaction and linking physiological functions and agronomic traits to DNA markers. This study conducted multi-environment experiments in different locations in Ethiopia to identify markers associated with NUE and NUE-related traits in potato. The results revealed significant marker-trait associations on specific genomic regions and highlighted the impact of production season on QTL x environment interaction for NUE-related traits.

Evaluating the Impact of Nitrogen Application on Growth and Productivity of Maize Under Control Conditions

Hafiz Mohkum Hammad et al.

Summary: Climatic conditions have a significant impact on maize productivity, with nitrogen fertilizer and temperature being the two main factors affecting maize growth. The experiments showed that temperature variations can affect maize emergence and growth, and the choice of temperature-tolerant maize hybrids plays a key role in achieving optimum grain yield.

Genome-Wide Association Analysis Reveals Genetic Architecture and Candidate Genes Associated with Grain Yield and Other Traits under Low Soil Nitrogen in Early-Maturing White Quality Protein Maize Inbred Lines

Olatunde A. Bhadmus et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) significantly associated with grain yield and other low-nitrogen tolerance-related traits under low-nitrogen conditions in maize production. The results revealed SNP markers and putative candidate genes associated with grain yield, stay-green characteristic, and plant and ear aspects under low-nitrogen conditions. These findings are important for improving low-nitrogen tolerance in maize production through marker-assisted selection.

The Stomatal Conductance and Fv/Fm as the Indicators of Stress Tolerance of Avocado Seedlings under Short-Term Waterlogging

Shu-Yen Lin et al.

Summary: Avocados in Taiwan may experience short-term waterlogging stress due to high temperatures and heavy rainfall. This study compared the waterlogging responses of different avocado seedlings and found that both stomatal conductance and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters can be effective indicators of waterlogging stress. The growth status of avocado seedlings should be considered when selecting stress-tolerant varieties.

Heterosis for Nitrogen Use Efficiency of Maize Hybrids Enhanced over Decades in China

Deep soil nitrogen storage slows nitrate leaching through the vadose zone

Julie N. Weitzman et al.

Summary: Nitrogen fertilizer applications are crucial for agricultural yield, but unused nitrogen can lead to surplus storage in soil or contamination of water sources. Monitoring the transport of water and nitrate in farmland revealed a decrease in nitrate leaching with increasing depth, mainly occurring during wet fall and winter seasons.

Maize prolificacy under contrasting plant densities and N supplies: I. Plant growth, biomass allocation and development of apical and sub-apical ears from floral induction to silking

Martin Parco et al.

Summary: Late sowing date and low plant densities are progressively adopted in limited-production regions for maize crop. In low plant densities, the expression of prolificacy can stabilize maize yield throughout environments, but limited adoption of N fertilization can reduce kernel set on the apical and sub-apical ear and consequently crop grain yield at low plant densities. A study analyzed the growth and floret differentiation of different hybrids of maize under contrasting plant densities and N fertilization rates, and found that N stress reduced floret differentiation of less prolific hybrids in the low plant density condition.

Flavonoids improve drought tolerance of maize seedlings by regulating the homeostasis of reactive oxygen species

Baozhu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of flavonoids in improving maize drought tolerance, using the doi57 mutant and wild-type B73 under drought stress. The results showed that the doi57 mutant exhibited better drought tolerance, growth performance, and higher levels of flavonoids compared to B73. Transcriptome analysis revealed enrichment of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis in doi57, indicating a potential mechanism for its improved drought tolerance.

The physiological response of photosynthesis to nitrogen deficiency

Xiaohuan Mu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen deficiency affects plant productivity and photosynthesis, leading to decreased photosynthetic rate. The reasons include reduced stomatal conductance, lower bioenergetics content, and decreased activity of photosynthetic enzymes. Choosing genotypes with higher nitrogen allocation and lower degradation of photosynthetic enzymes can help maintain high grain yield under low nitrogen deficiency.

Understanding Maize Response to Nitrogen Limitation in Different Light Conditions for the Improvement of Photosynthesis

Aleksandra Urban et al.

Summary: The photosynthetic capacity of leaves is determined by nitrogen content, which is divided between soluble proteins and thylakoid membrane proteins. In C4 plants, the photosynthetic apparatus is partitioned between mesophyll cells and bundle sheath, with enzymes localized in a cell-specific manner. Changes in light intensity and nitrogen concentration influence nitrates content in leaves, affecting the activity of enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism and ultimately reducing photosynthetic N use efficiency.
