Analysis of landrace cultivation in Europe: A means to support in situ conservation of crop diversity

Lorenzo Raggi et al.

Summary: Over the past century, the switch from landraces to modern high yielding varieties in Europe has led to a significant reduction in crop diversity. However, a recent study has collected information on over 19,000 geo-referenced landrace cultivation sites from 14 European countries, highlighting the cultivation of 141 herbaceous and 48 tree species across the continent. Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Spain have the highest number of landrace species cultivated.

In situ and ex situ conservation gap analyses of crop wild relatives from Malawi

Nolipher Khaki Mponya et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the conservation gaps of priority crop wild relatives in Malawi to develop a coordinated conservation strategy. Results showed that a majority of ecological diversity is concentrated in a few protected areas and grid cells, while gaps in ex situ conservation need to be addressed.

Extinction risk of Mesoamerican crop wild relatives

Barbara Goettsch et al.

Summary: Crop wild relatives (CWR) are plant taxa closely related to crops, providing high genetic diversity to help crops adapt to global change impacts. They play a vital role in food security and sustainable agriculture, but are at risk of extinction due to anthropogenic threats. Measures to conserve and research CWR are essential to ensure their availability for current and future generations.
