Regulation of photosynthesis under salt stress and associated tolerance mechanisms

Noreen Zahra et al.

Summary: Photosynthesis is crucial for plant productivity, but salinity stress can have a significant impact on the photosynthetic apparatus. This study explores the effects of salinity on chloroplast operation and photosynthetic genes, and discusses strategies for improving salt stress tolerance through genetic approaches, microbial inoculations, and root architecture changes.

Insights into the Role of Iron Supplementation in Conferring Bicarbonate-Mediated Alkaline Stress Tolerance in Maize

Bipul Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tolerance of maize to bicarbonate toxicity by studying photosynthetic and physiological changes, with a focus on the moderation of carbonic anhydrase activity. Iron supplementation (with Fe-EDTA) is found to influence photosynthetic activities and sugar metabolism, improving the tolerance to alkaline stress. The study suggests that the C-4-specific CO2-concentrating mechanism and physiological attributes, such as the activity of carbonic anhydrase, play crucial roles in alkaline stress tolerance.

Spatial resolution of an integrated C4+CAM photosynthetic metabolism

Jose J. Moreno-Villena et al.

Summary: C-4 and CAM photosynthesis have evolved multiple times in plants over the past 30 million years and have been considered distinct and incompatible adaptations. However, it has been discovered that in Portulaca oleracea, these systems are completely integrated and occur in the same cells, providing a potential new blueprint for crop improvement.

Response and Defence Mechanisms of Vegetable Crops against Drought, Heat and Salinity Stress

Maria Giordano et al.

Summary: Climate change and extreme climatic events are closely related to environmental pollution, increasing CO2 levels and the greenhouse effect, posing challenges to global food security. Vegetables crops are more susceptible to climate change and require responses to single or combined environmental stressors, with understanding the mechanisms behind these responses being crucial for creating tolerant genotypes in the long term.

Proton motive force in plant photosynthesis dominated by ΔpH in both low and high light

Sam Wilson et al.

Summary: The proton motive force (pmf) across the thylakoid membrane plays a crucial role in coupling photosynthetic electron transport and ATP synthesis. The use of electrochromic carotenoid and chlorophyll absorption band shift (ECS) to measure pmf in leaves has become widespread, but the interpretation of the results remains controversial. This study demonstrated that the majority of the pmf attributed to Delta psi by the ECS parsing method is actually caused by the overlap of Delta A505 and Delta A535, confirming that pmf is mainly composed of Delta pH following continuous illumination.

Melatonin and Carbohydrate Metabolism in Plant Cells

Marino B. Arnao et al.

Summary: Melatonin, a multifunctional molecule present in all living organisms, is synthesized in plant cells in various organelles and plays a role as a modulatory agent improving plant tolerance to stress. This study reviews the effects of melatonin on plant carbohydrate metabolism under stress conditions, evaluating its modulation on various biosynthetic and degradation pathways. Furthermore, potential applications of melatonin in crop improvement and postharvest products are examined.
