The discontinuum of river networks: the importance of geomorphic boundaries

Murray W. Scown et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatial organization and strength of geomorphic boundaries within the river network of 10 drainage basins in the Kimberley region of NW Australia. The research finds that the river network in the Kimberley region is naturally highly fragmented, and tributary confluences are not the dominant control on discontinuities in the river network. The strength and spatial organization of geomorphic boundaries play a crucial role in the fragmentation of the river network.

The Heterogeneity of Ecosystem Services across the Riverine Landscape of the Koshi River Basin, Nepal

Sagar Ratna Bajracharya et al.

Summary: This study examines the congruency between the physical template and the supply of ecosystem services in riverine landscapes of the Koshi River Basin, Nepal, and finds that the supply of ecosystem services is congruent with the river functional process zones (FPZs) and mediated by social factors.

Habitat availability determines food chain length and interaction strength in food webs of a large lowland river

Mario Brauns et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of hydromorphological alterations on river food webs and found that profoundly altered shorelines had less complex food webs and shorter food chains compared to semi-natural shorelines. The total ingestion rates were significantly lower at highly altered shorelines due to decreased ingestion rates by native species. However, predator-prey interaction strength was comparable among shorelines, suggesting that non-native predators can function similarly to native predators.

Intercontinental analysis of temperate steppe stream food webs reveals consistent autochthonous support of fishes

Emily R. Arsenault et al.

Summary: Using compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis, the study found that aquatic resources played a consistent and important role in supporting fish consumers in streams, while terrestrial carbon did not directly contribute to their diet.

Respiration regimes in rivers: Partitioning source-specific respiration from metabolism time series

Enrico Bertuzzo et al.

Summary: This study used an inverse modeling framework to estimate the contribution of different organic matter sources to stream ecosystem respiration and found that respiration of autochthonous organic matter was correlated with seasonal peaks in gross primary production, while respiration associated with litter inputs was larger in smaller streams.

Variation in macroinvertebrate community structure of functional process zones along the river continuum: New elements for the interpretation of the river ecosystem synthesis

Alain Maasri et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the structure and variability of macroinvertebrate communities in three rivers, finding that FPZ and SO delineations contributed similarly to the variance in community structure. Taxa turnover was the main driver of compositional change in FPZ communities along the river continuum, while functional composition primarily exhibited a nested structure. Pairwise comparisons showed significant differences in community composition at high SO in the three rivers, suggesting that FPZ communities are only partially comparable along the river continuum.

A framework for lotic macrosystem research

James H. Thorp et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the nature of research in freshwater macrosystem biology, focusing on lotic studies, from both conceptual and current research perspectives. It describes the boundaries of permanent and transitional lotic macrosystems across spatial extents, contrasts ecosystem vs. macrosystem research, and provides examples of aquatic macrosystems ecology projects in the USA. The article also recommends incorporating large-scale lotic concepts developed over the last 40 years as the basis for lotic macrosystem studies and suggests future research directions in areas of climate change and teleconnections among distant organisms and systems.

Valley-scale hydrogeomorphology drives river fish assemblage variation in Mongolia

Alain Maasri et al.

Summary: This study reveals that valley-scale hydrogeomorphology is a significant driver of variation in fish assemblages at a macrosystem scale, especially in river networks of different ecoregions. Hydrogeomorphology has a significant impact on the taxonomic composition and functional diversity of fish assemblages in river networks.
