Severe malaria in children and adolescents in Southeast Gabon

Judicael Boris Lendongo Wombo et al.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiological aspects of severe malaria in rural, semi-rural, and urban areas of southeast Gabon. The study found that the epidemiological characteristics of severe malaria were similar in the three settings, but more severe in urban areas. Children under 5 years of age are the most vulnerable age group.

Decrease on malaria clinical cases from 2017 to 2019 in Franceville, Southeast Gabon, Central Africa

Larson Boundenga et al.

Summary: A retrospective study was conducted to assess clinical cases of malaria in a private medical analysis laboratory in Franceville, Gabon between 2017 and 2019. The study revealed an increase in malaria prevalence during this period, with children and patients aged 5-14 being more affected. Malaria infection was also found to be significantly dependent on season and gender. The study highlights the need for strategies to control malaria in Franceville, taking into account the epidemiological context and environmental constraints.

A population genetic perspective on the origin, spread and adaptation of the human malaria agents Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax

Virginie Rougeron et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the genetic analyses on the origin and spread of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, the two main agents of human malaria, as well as their adaptation to humans. Malaria is a significant cause of mortality worldwide, and understanding the origin and spread of these parasites has been a topic of interest in the scientific community.

Changes in Container-Breeding Mosquito Diversity and Abundance Along an Urbanization Gradient are Associated With Dominance of Arboviral Vectors

MyKenna Zettle et al.

Summary: Environmental conditions associated with urbanization have significant impacts on the composition and abundance of mosquito assemblages. This study examines how impervious cover and temperature variation affect container-breeding mosquito species in Maryland, USA. The results show that impervious cover and temperature have different effects on mosquito species, with temperature being a positive predictor of larval abundance and pupae occurrence.

Summary: This study monitored malaria transmission and distribution of insecticide resistance genes in Anopheles populations from three rural areas of Moyen Ogooue Province, Gabon. Results showed heterogeneous malaria transmission intensity and high frequency of resistance mutations, highlighting the need for locally adapted control measures.

Systematic Review on Diversity and Distribution of Anopheles Species in Gabon: A Fresh Look at the Potential Malaria Vectors and Perspectives

Neil Michel Longo-Pendy et al.

Summary: Gabon is located in a highly endemic area for malaria, but information about the distribution of malaria vectors in the country is lacking. In this review, the researchers examined various studies on Anopheles mosquitoes in Gabon and found a wide diversity of species with a heterogeneous distribution. The most abundant species belonged to the Gambiae and Nili complexes and the Funestus and Moucheti groups. Interestingly, the major and minor malaria vectors were found in both sylvatic, rural, and urban environments. This raises questions about the role of the sylvatic environment in maintaining malaria transmission in different settings. Overall, the knowledge of Anopheles mosquito biodiversity and spatial distribution in Gabon is incomplete, highlighting the need for additional studies to update and complete these entomological data for effective vector control strategies.

The role of different Culex mosquito species in the transmission of West Nile virus and avian malaria parasites in Mediterranean areas

Martina Ferraguti et al.

Summary: Vector-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, such as West Nile virus and avian malaria parasites of the genus Plasmodium, have severe impacts on public health and economy. Different species of Culex mosquitoes play important roles in the transmission of these pathogens, with Cx. perexiguus identified as the most important species contributing to the amplification of WNV in southern Spain. Targeted surveillance and control of specific mosquito species may be effective measures to reduce the transmission of these diseases.

The genome of the zoonotic malaria parasite Plasmodium simium reveals adaptations to host switching

Tobias Mourier et al.

Summary: Plasmodium simium, a malaria parasite of non-human primates, likely originated in South America from Plasmodium vivax and has recently acquired the ability to infect humans. Genetic analysis suggests that specific gene deletions in P. simium, especially in the Duffy-binding protein 1 (DBP1), may play a role in its ability to invade human red blood cells, leading to recent zoonotic infections.

Ecological plasticity to ions concentration determines genetic response and dominance of Anopheles coluzzii larvae in urban coastal habitats of Central Africa

Neil M. Longo-Pendy et al.

Summary: The study found that Anopheles coluzzii exhibits ecological plasticity to breed in diverse aquatic conditions, with a predominance in breeding sites rich in ions. Additionally, gene expression patterns were comparable between urban and rural habitats, indicating a broad response to ions concentrations of various origins. This suggests that Anopheles coluzzii has a plastic response to occupy both coastal and urban habitats, which has important implications for malaria control efforts amidst rapid urban expansion in Africa in the near future.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the impact of different urbanisation patterns on the establishment and distribution of Aedes mosquitoes and the spread of arboviral diseases. The results showed a clear association between urbanisation, vector abundance, and disease transmission, highlighting the need for a multidimensional perspective in designing effective public health approaches.

Summary: Culex species, including members of the Culex pipiens complex, were studied in Kura Local Government Area of North-western Nigeria to determine their relative abundance and multiplex PCR identification. Although Culex species are currently seen as a biting nuisance without significant epidemiological importance, efforts should be intensified to control their populations and prevent the spread of diseases among humans, livestock, and avian species.
