New species of fossil Dryopterites from the Lower Cretaceous in the Zhongkouzi Basin, Beishan area, Northwest China, and its geological significance

Wen-Xiu Ren et al.

Summary: Fossil remains of Dryopterites fern foliage were found in the Lower Cretaceous Chijinbao Formation in the Beishan area of Northwest China. A new species is described based on its morphological characteristics and reproductive details. These fossils represent the first record of Dryopterites from the Chijinbao Formation and provide new evidence on the origin of the genus.

On the systematic position of the Early Cretaceous fern genus Athyrium

Chun -Xiang Li et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis, it is likely incorrect to assign the fossils from the Early Cretaceous to the genus Athyrium, as the earliest athyriums probably diverged during the Eocene or later. By studying the sorus morphology of extant genera related to Athyriaceae, it was found that the diagnostic feature for assigning the Cretaceous fossils to Athyrium is common to the entire family or ancestral for the genus. Comparing the frond morphology of the fossil with living taxa of the family, it was determined that the fossil is more closely related to the Deparia clade rather than the clade including Athyrium.

Microlepia burmasia sp. nov., a new fern species from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber of norther Myanmar (Dennstaedtiaceae, Polypodiales)

Xiaoxuan Long et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a fossilized fern with fertile pinnae preserved in mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar, which has been assigned to the genus Microlepia and named Microlepia burmasia. This finding adds to the diversity of polypod ferns in the Cretaceous and dates the origin of Microlepia to at least 60 million years earlier, coinciding with the rise of angiosperms.

A new fossil fern of the Dryopteridaceae (Polypodiales) from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber

Xiaoxuan Long et al.

Summary: This article reports a new genus of Dryopteridaceae based on a well-preserved fertile specimen frond in mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber, representing the first fossil record of Dryopteridaceae from the Mesozoic. The age of this fossil is consistent with molecular-based estimates of divergence time, and it expands our understanding of polypod fern diversity in Mesozoic forests.

Phylogeny, biogeography, and character evolution in the fern family Hypodematiaceae

Xue-Ping Fan et al.

Summary: This study conducted phylogenetic analyses of the family Hypodematiaceae, supporting its monophyly. It found that Leucostegia consists of two clades, while Hypodematium includes seven strongly supported clades or single-accession clades. The study also inferred the evolution of important morphological characters and proposed the latest Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous origin of the family and the Upper Cretaceous origin of the two genera, with Hypodematiaceae originating from East Asia.

Summary: This study used high-resolution X-ray computed microtomography to investigate the polymorphic characters of the upper dentition in Crocidura. The results showed that the Ethiopian endemic species Crocidura yaldeni has the most complex character states. Geometric morphometric and principal components analyses revealed significant shape alterations and morphological trajectories in different Crocidura species, suggesting neomorphosis and regional adaptation as potential factors driving these changes.

Long-term evolution of quantitative traits in the Drosophila melanogaster species subgroup

Amir Yassin et al.

Summary: Quantitative genetics aims to study the effects of genetic and environmental factors on phenotypic variation, while the phylogenetic signal concept, often called species-level heritability, is similar to heritability. In this study, the potential relationship between these two concepts was examined by analyzing multiple morphological traits in fruit flies. The results showed that pigmentation traits were most concordant with the phylogeny, but no correlation was found between phylogenetic signal and heritability estimates. However, a significant positive correlation was found between quantitative traits and climatic variables. The potential causes for the discrepancy between these two statistics were discussed, and caution was given against their confusion in evolutionary biology.

An open and continuously updated fern tree of life

Joel H. Nitta et al.

Summary: This study introduces an automated pipeline for creating a continuously updated fern tree of life (FTOL) using DNA sequence data from GenBank. The pipeline combines whole plastomes and commonly sequenced plastid regions to obtain a high-resolution global fern phylogeny. By resolving synonyms using a curated reference taxonomy, the FTOL includes about 40% more species than previous global fern phylogenies. The FTOL and its associated datasets are available through a web portal and R packages, providing immediate access to the most up-to-date and comprehensive fern phylogeny.

Phylogeny and Character Evolution of the Neotropical Fern Genus Cyclodium (Dryopteridaceae)

Amabily Bohn et al.

Summary: Cyclodium is a neotropical fern genus with unique characteristics, mainly found in the Amazonian lowlands and the Guianan region. It is supported as monophyletic and sister to Polybotrya based on molecular phylogenetic analysis. The presence of peltate indusia is a key distinguishing feature of Cyclodium.

Simultaneous diversification of Polypodiales and angiosperms in the Mesozoic

Summary: Comprising the majority of extant fern species diversity, Polypodiales are believed to have originated in the Late Cretaceous. Conservation, preparation and imaging of diverse ambers and their inclusions

Eva-Maria Sadowski et al.

Summary: Amber, a natural polymer derived from fossil tree resin, is susceptible to deterioration due to light, temperature, humidity, oxygen, and exposure to certain chemicals. To prevent degradation, it is recommended to store amber in a climate-monitored environment with minimal light exposure and embed specimens in artificial epoxide resin. Light microscopy is commonly used for imaging inclusions, while X-ray based methods such as micro-CT are increasingly important for examining internal structures of inclusions in opaque amber.
