A preliminary study of atypical cortical change ability of dynamic whole-brain functional connectivity in autism spectrum disorder

Bo Chen

Summary: This study introduces a new framework for researching the roots of ASD brains using the dynamic functional connectivity methodology based on fMRI data. By focusing on the time-varying aspects of FCs, the study found widespread abnormalities in the brain cortex of ASD patients. Moreover, abnormal C-scores were also observed in various brain subsystems. The findings highlight the potential of C-score as a meaningful biological marker to explore cortical activity in ASD.

Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Pilot Study on Efficacy, Feasibility, Safety, and Unexpected Outcomes in Tic Disorder and Epilepsy

Giordano D'Urso et al.

Summary: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the cerebellar lobe shows potential in reducing the severity of symptoms in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this pilot study, 20 sessions of cathodal stimulation resulted in a 25% reduction in global severity of symptoms, with improvements in multiple subscales. The treatment was well-tolerated without serious adverse events.

Disrupted functional connectivity of the primary auditory cortex in autism

Katherine Conway Wilson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the functional connectivity of the primary auditory cortex in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The results showed reduced connectivity between the auditory cortex and specific regions, such as the medial occipital cortex and primary motor cortex, in individuals with ASD compared to those without ASD. This reduced connectivity may contribute to deficient sensory integration associated with ASD.

Effect of Short-Term Deep-Pressure Portable Seat on Behavioral and Biological Stress in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Pilot Study

Ilham Yustar Afif et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an autism hug machine portable seat (AHMPS) on behavioral and neurobiological stress in children with ASD. The results showed that children wearing the inflatable wrap experienced behavioral improvement and a reduction in sympathetic stress response, indicating that the inflatable wrap is an effective method for reducing emotional arousal.

Brain network topology unraveling epilepsy and ASD Association: Automated EEG-based diagnostic model

Tanu Wadhera

Summary: This study investigated the brain functional topology of ASD + E compared to ASD and epilepsy, revealing that ASD + E mainly affects brain network topology in frontal, temporal, and parietal regions, with some functional overlap with ASD and epilepsy. Furthermore, a combination of metrics using Support Vector Machine classifier showed high accuracy in distinguishing these groups.

The Development of Brain Network in Males with Autism Spectrum Disorders from Childhood to Adolescence: Evidence from fNIRS Study

Wei Cao et al.

Summary: The study utilized fNIRS to collect resting-state signals from 77 males with ASD and 40 TD males in the ToM network. Results indicated that males with ASD exhibited a comparable global network topology and age-related decreases in the mPFC similar to TD individuals, but showed different trajectories in nodal metrics of TPJ and MFG in comparison to TD participants, which were associated with social and communication deficits. This suggests a distinct developmental trajectory of the ToM network in males with ASD from childhood to adolescence.

A Review of the Default Mode Network in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Amritha Harikumar et al.

Summary: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is commonly used to study the relationships between brain function and phenotypic features in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly the default mode network (DMN) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Research shows a mixed pattern of connectivity in DMN for ASD patients, while ADHD patients exhibit mostly stronger connectivity. Factors such as age, intelligence quotient, medication status, and heredity affect DMN connectivity in both ASD and ADHD.

Relationship between Short-Range and Homotopic Long-Range Resting State Functional Connectivity in Temporal Lobes in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Xiaoyin Wu et al.

Summary: The study found differences in resting state functional connectivity between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children, with ASD children showing weaker short-range and homotopic long-range connectivity compared to TD children. These observations might help in better understanding the underlying cortical mechanism in ASD.

Analysis of Brain Functional Connectivity Neural Circuits in Children With Autism Based on Persistent Homology

Di Liang et al.

Summary: This study established a VR complex filtration model of brain functional network using resting-state fMRI data of children aged 6-13 years with ASD and TD controls. The results show significant differences in the FC neural circuits of brain networks between the ASD group and the TD control group, with decreased FC neural circuits in the ASD group. Individual brain regions such as the right orbital part of the superior frontal gyrus, left supplementary motor area, left hippocampus, and right caudate nucleus showed reduced involvement in FC neural circuits in the ASD group compared to the TD control group.
