The value of brain MRI functional connectivity data in a machine learning classifier for distinguishing migraine from persistent post-traumatic headache

Gina Dumkrieger et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop classification models to differentiate persistent post-traumatic headache (PPTH) from migraine using clinical data and MRI measures. The results showed that multivariate models based on clinical characteristics, functional connectivity, and brain structure data can accurately classify and differentiate PPTH from migraine.

Cortical spreading depression: culprits and mechanisms

Aparna Ann Mathew et al.

Summary: Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is an electrophysiological phenomenon that affects various aspects of brain physiology. It has a significant impact on brain function and is associated with diseases such as migraine with aura, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. Factors such as nutrition, stress, sleep, and age can worsen the condition and increase susceptibility to CSD. The underlying mechanisms, including ionic imbalance and neurotransmitter alterations, are interconnected and contribute to the development of CSD.

Study on Atypical Migraine Auras in the Pediatric Age: The Role of Cortical Spreading Depression and the Physiopathogenetic Hypothesis Arising from Our Clinical Cases

Vincenzo Raieli et al.

Summary: Migraine is a complex neurologic disorder that affects multiple systems of the central nervous system. Keeping an aura diary can help in diagnosing and preventing under-diagnosis of rare migraine manifestations. Complex migraine manifestations require a thorough diagnostic work-up to exclude dangerous neurologic pathologies.

Microstructural white matter alterations associated with migraine headaches: a systematic review of diffusion tensor imaging studies

Rahil Rahimi et al.

Summary: The pathophysiology of migraine as a headache disorder is still undetermined, but DTI studies have provided valuable insights into the microstructural changes associated with this disease. Alterations in diffusion parameters have been observed in various brain regions, including white matter tracts, subcortical areas, and the cortex. These changes show variability across migraine cycle phases, and are also observed in patients with depressive/anxiety symptoms. However, there are inconsistent findings regarding the differences between chronic and episodic migraine. Overall, migraine is associated with microstructural changes in widespread regions of the brain, which may reflect neuronal damage and plasticity mechanisms.

Relationships between migraine and epilepsy: Pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical implications

G. Demarquay et al.

Summary: Migraine and epilepsy are distinct neurological diseases with specific clinical features and underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, but they have complex and multifaceted relationships. The relationships between headache and epilepsy manifest in various ways such as clinical diagnosis challenges, overlapping symptoms, and co-morbid conditions. Advances in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of these interactions have been made, particularly in familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM).
