Sleep Treatments in Disorders of Consciousness: A Systematic Review

Martina Cacciatore et al.

Summary: Sleep disorders are common comorbidities in patients with a Disorder of Consciousness. Detecting and treating sleep disorders can be an effective strategy to improve consciousness recovery and levels of awareness. Existing studies have shown that both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are effective for sleep disorders and levels of awareness. Therefore, clinical evaluations should be conducted to detect sleep disorders in these patients and provide timely treatment.

From Dawn to Dusk - Mimicking Natural Daylight Exposure Improves Circadian Rhythm Entrainment in Patients with Severe Brain Injury

Monika Angerer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of light therapy on circadian rhythms in post-comatose patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). The results showed that dynamic daylight stimulation can entrain and stabilize circadian rhythms in these patients, highlighting the importance of adequate room lighting as an adjunct therapeutic approach for improving their rhythms.

A simple intervention for disorders of consciousness- is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

Kudret Yelden et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess sleep and circadian rhythms in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) and optimize them using a treatment combining melatonin, caffeine, and blue light. The results showed significant improvements in clinical and physiological measures following the intervention. The findings suggest the importance of integrating sleep and circadian rhythm optimization into rehabilitation programs for DOC patients.

Foundations of Human Consciousness: Imaging the Twilight Zone

Annalotta Scheinin et al.

Summary: The experiments indicate that losing consciousness does not necessarily mean losing unconsciousness, as most subjects had internally generated experiences during unresponsive states. Unresponsive anesthetic states and verified sleep stages indicated a disconnected state, distinct from a connected state. Activity of the thalamus, cingulate cortices, and angular gyri was found to be fundamental for human consciousness.

Consciousness among delta waves: a paradox?

Joel Frohlich et al.

Summary: The presence of high amplitude delta waves has long been associated with diminished consciousness, but recent studies have shown prominent delta activity during conscious states, casting doubt on this hypothesis. By examining both electrophysiological complexity and spectral power, false inferences of unconscious states can be best avoided.

Adenosine integrates light and sleep signalling for the regulation of circadian timing in mice

Aarti Jagannath et al.

Summary: Adenosine plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms through multiple signaling pathways, influenced by sleep history and light exposure. These findings contribute to understanding the interaction between sleep and circadian timing.

Many Faces of the Hidden Souls: Medical and Neurological Complications and Comorbidities in Disorders of Consciousness

Bei Zhang et al.

Summary: Patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) often experience common complications such as pneumonia, pain, and pressure ulcers. Reversible causes and potential confounders occur at high rates, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues in clinical practice. Identifying and managing these complications and comorbidities is crucial for optimal outcomes in DoC patients.

A Systematic Review of Sleep in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness: From Diagnosis to Prognosis

Jiahui Pan et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the evaluation of disorders of consciousness (DOC) patients through analyzing sleep patterns, and explores the relationships between sleep patterns and diagnosis/prognosis outcomes. Studying the sleep patterns of patients with DOC can help differentiate between patients with different levels of consciousness.
