Sex/gender differences in children with autism spectrum disorder: A brief overview on epidemiology, symptom profile, and neuroanatomy

Sara Calderoni

Summary: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a diverse group of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by social interaction and communication impairments, as well as restricted patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. Historically, the higher prevalence of ASD in males has led to a lack of research on females with autism, including their clinical presentation, genetic architecture, and brain structure. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing interest in studying sex/gender differences in ASD, resulting in a growing number of investigations. These studies serve as the foundation for developing assessment and treatment practices that consider sex/gender differences in ASD, with the ultimate aim of improving healthcare for both males and females with ASD.

A randomized controlled trial into the effects of probiotics on electroencephalography in preschoolers with autism

Lucia Billeci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of probiotics on brain electrical activity in children with autism spectrum disorder. The results suggest that probiotics may lead to a shift in brain activity towards a more typical pattern, with decreased power in certain brain regions and increased coherence in specific frequency bands. The findings also highlight the importance of further research to better understand the mechanistic links between probiotics supplementation and changes in brain activity in autism spectrum disorder.

The amplitude of fNIRS hemodynamic response in the visual cortex unmasks autistic traits in typically developing children

Raffaele Mazziotti et al.

Summary: Autistic traits exist as a continuum dimension in the population, with ASD as the extreme end of the spectrum. Evidence suggests that neuroanatomical and neurofunctional characteristics in relatives of individuals with ASD represent an intermediate neurobiological pattern. This highlights the potential of utilizing quantitative measures of autistic traits in the general population as biomarkers for early identification of ASD-related pathophysiological processes. Additionally, fNIRS shows promise as a tool for assessing brain function, with potential applications in differential diagnosis, treatment analysis, and personalized medicine for various neurological conditions.

Infant Visual Brain Development and Inherited Genetic Liability in Autism

Jessica B. Girault et al.

Summary: This study used MRI techniques to examine the brain development of siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and found that higher levels of ASD traits in the probands were associated with larger brain volume and surface area, reduced white matter integrity, and weaker functional connectivity in the visual system among siblings who developed ASD. These findings suggest that familial ASD traits contribute to specific early brain MRI phenotypes and influence the prodromal development of visual circuitry in ASD.

Global prevalence of autism: A systematic review update

Jinan Zeidan et al.

Summary: This article reviews the prevalence of autism worldwide, considering the impact of geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors on prevalence estimates. Approximately 1/100 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder around the world. Prevalence estimates increased over time and varied greatly within and across sociodemographic groups. These findings reflect changes in the definition of autism and differences in the methodology and contexts of prevalence studies.

Looking for fNIRS Signature in Autism Spectrum: A Systematic Review Starting From Preschoolers

Eugenia Conti et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) can provide insights into neural circuit organization and cortical activity in the developing brain. fNIRS measures neurovascular coupling to study brain functions through changes in cerebral blood flow and oxygenation levels. The interest in identifying fNIRS as a potential biomarker for early diagnosis and treatment outcome in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is reflected in the increasing number of scientific publications on this topic. This systematic review focuses on the clinical applications of fNIRS in NDDs, particularly in preschool children. The selected studies indicate that fNIRS shows promise in identifying early quantitative biomarkers for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through resting-state functional connectivity and task-evoked brain activation.

Neuroimaging Techniques as Descriptive and Diagnostic Tools for Infants at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Maria J. Ayoub et al.

Summary: Research suggests that neuroimaging can reliably identify structural and functional differences between autistic and non-autistic brains at an early stage. Neuroimaging methods can also be used to predict ASD diagnosis among high-risk infants and their developmental outcomes in later stages.

Adaptive Behavior Profiles in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Celine A. Saulnier et al.

Summary: Recent research has confirmed the existence of adaptive deficits in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, especially in social skills. These impairments are closely related to other co-occurring conditions such as executive functioning impairments, psychiatric conditions, and even psychosis. It is important to emphasize the importance of adaptive functioning in diagnostic evaluations and intervention programs for individuals with ASD to ensure their potential for success.

Exclusion of females in autism research: Empirical evidence for a leaky recruitment-to-research pipeline

Anila M. D'Mello et al.

Summary: Despite efforts to increase representation of autistic females in research, studies consistently enroll small samples or exclude females altogether. The use of a common diagnostic measure in autism research leads to higher exclusion rates for females. Reliance on community diagnosis rather than confirmatory diagnostic assessments results in more equal sex ratios.

Summary: The study found that female individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibited better social behavior and communication skills, while high compensators showed stronger social engagement and communication behaviors. When stratified based on compensation level, participants with high compensation demonstrated stronger social engagement and communication behaviors.

Applications of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in neonates

Cheng Peng et al.

Summary: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a widely used method for monitoring brain oxygenation, particularly in clinical and scientific research. Although its use in newborns is limited by monitoring depth and spatial resolution, recent technological advances have allowed exploration of neuronal activity patterns in both healthy and pathological conditions.

Asymmetry in the Central Nervous System: A Clinical Neuroscience Perspective

Annakarina Mundorf et al.

Summary: Recent large-scale neuroimaging studies have shown structural differences between the left and right hemispheres of the human brain. While many neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders are associated with altered structural asymmetries, the relationship between these asymmetries and disorders remains inconsistent. Different disorders exhibit distinct patterns of alterations in structural hemispheric asymmetries.

Summary: Identification of ASD biomarkers is crucial for understanding and diagnosing autism, with EEG being a potential option. Gender, age, and diagnosis all have effects on EEG power, with females with ASD showing differences from males with ASD. Associations between EEG and behavior also vary by gender, highlighting the importance of considering individual differences in research on ASD biomarkers.
