Anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation: A way forward through waste valorization approach

Chi Cheng Chong et al.

Summary: Microalgae are considered high potential feedstocks for liquid fuels to meet the increasing global energy demand, but the high costs of nutrients can hinder commercialization. Using organic-rich anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source can improve economic viability and sustainability of microalgae production, while also reducing waste and reutilizing organic fractions. Proposed solutions such as digestate dilution, microalgae strain selection, and additional organics can address challenges related to nutrient availability and toxicity, providing future directions for research in cultivating microalgae.

Ammonia emissions from agriculture and their contribution to fine particulate matter: A review of implications for human health

Katie E. Wyer et al.

Summary: Atmospheric ammonia released from agriculture has significant contributions to acidification and potential direct impacts on human health. Handling livestock exposes individuals to ammonia, which can cause respiratory health issues. Recent studies show that agricultural ammonia may also contribute to the early onset of asthma in children. Additionally, ammonia is a substantial contributor to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can lead to long-term illnesses and economic losses. Reducing ammonia emissions from agriculture can mitigate premature deaths and economic losses associated with PM2.5.

Upgrading waste material flow analysis with process models: The case of anaerobic digestion

C. Urtnowski-Morin et al.

Summary: Material flow analysis (MFA) is a valuable tool for decision making in waste management systems, relying on transfer coefficients to model flows of goods and substances. This study compared three levels of model complexity to upgrade MFA, showing that simpler models were sufficient to predict methane production while complex models were needed for behavior regarding nitrogen loss. Integrating the model in transient state was advantageous for nitrogen modelling, and upgrading MFA with a process model like ADM1 allows for better analysis of waste treatment processes.

Assessment of a deep, LED-enhanced high-rate algal pond for the treatment of digestate

A. F. Torres-Franco et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating LED lighting can significantly improve the treatment efficiency of deep HRAPs in wastewater treatment, with a smaller footprint compared to traditional shallow HRAPs. HRAP(2) using LED enhancement achieved similar performance to HRAP(1) in treating 5% and 25% digestate, but HRAP(1) performed better in handling 50% digestate.

Microalgae Cultivation in Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Treatment and Biofuel Production

Sze Shin Low et al.

Summary: Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the wastewater produced during palm oil sterilization process, containing harmful nutrients and phosphorous. Effective pre-treatment of POME is essential due to its high BOD and COD levels. Microalgae, such as C. pyrenoidosa, show potential in treating POME by achieving nutrient reduction and lipid production. Experimental studies on microalgae characteristics and performance are being conducted for feasibility assessment, with the aim of biofuel production.

A critical review of ammonia recovery from anaerobic digestate of organic wastes via stripping

Advait Palakodeti et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a mature technology that converts organic waste into biogas, but the released ammonia may have inhibitory effects, necessitating its recovery. Gas-liquid stripping is a technology to recover ammonia, but research on its application to anaerobic digestate of organic wastes is limited. Further research could focus on the effect of digestate composition on ammonia recovery and the impact of stripping gas on ammonia removal.

Pretreatment by composting increased the utilization proportion of pig manure biogas digestate and improved the seedling substrate quality

Ruixue Chang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion of organic residues has the potential to shift from fossil to renewable energy, with pig manure biogas digestate (PMBD) evaluated as a part of seedling substrates in this study. Composting was found to improve the characteristics of PMBD for plant growth, with perlite and sawdust additives decreasing pH values and enhancing growth, although high proportions led to growth inhibition.

Digestate mechanical separation in industrial conditions: Efficiency profiles and fertilising potential

Aleksandra Chuda et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of decanter centrifuge operating parameters on the effectiveness of digestate mechanical separation and the impact of adding flocculants on liquid-solid fraction composition. Addition of flocculants significantly increased the removal efficiency of dry matter and organic matter in the digestate, resulting in better separation results under optimal conditions.

Optimization of Hydrolysis-Acidogenesis Phase of Swine Manure for Biogas Production Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Fermentation

Chiu-Yue Lin et al.

Summary: Through response surface methodology, the optimization of operational period and initial operational pH for hydrolysis and acidogenesis of swine manure at 35 degrees C in batch operation mode was conducted. The optimal condition resulted in peak volatile acid production, methane production rate, and methane yield. The two-stage anaerobic system showed higher biogas production efficiency compared to a single-stage system, with similar dominant methane-producing species.
