Semi-analytical finite element method for simulating chemical dissolution-front instability problems in fluid-saturated porous media

Chongbin Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper develops a semi-analytical finite element method for solving chemical dissolution-front instability problems in fluid-saturated porous media. The use of horizontal and vertical components of the pore-fluid velocity as fundamental unknown variables can improve the accuracy of the related numerical solution. The column pivot element solver is useful for solving the finite element equations of a chemical dissolution-front instability problem.

The area under the generalized receiver-operating characteristic curve

Pablo Martinez-Camblor et al.

Summary: ROC curve and AUC are commonly used for evaluating the discriminatory ability of markers, while gROC curve and gAUC are extensions to handle more complex situations and provide a more comprehensive assessment of classification capacity. This paper delves into the properties of gAUC, providing expressions for asymptotic variance and covariance, as well as proposing a non-parametric procedure for comparison. Monte Carlo simulations and a real-world example are used to illustrate the practical application of these methods.

Relationship between sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease risk among Taiwanese older adults

Yuan-Yuei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, and cardiovascular risk among older community-dwelling adults. The results showed that older dynapenic men and sarcopenic women had higher risks of 10-year coronary heart disease (CHD), while presarcopenic older adults had the lowest CHD risk.

Chemical reactions of carbonate-rich mudstones with aqueous CO2 and their impacts on rock?s local microstructural and chemo-mechanical properties

Ravi Prakash et al.

Summary: This study provides an integrated microscale chemo-mechanical and microstructural characterization of carbonate mudstones exposed to CO2-rich brine under high pressure and high temperature conditions. The results show the preferred precipitation of calcium carbonates and different regions of porosity and carbonate content, which play a critical role in mechanical alteration of rock. Microscale chemo-mechanical testing complements the micro-CT results by revealing lower hardness in dissolution zones and increased values in precipitation zones. The microstructural and mechanical properties of the microscale regions are expected to influence the overall mechanical properties and integrity of the rock.

Spatial Association Between Orogenic Gold Mineralization and Structures Revealed by 3D Prospectivity Modeling: A Case Study of the Xiadian Gold Deposit, Jiaodong Peninsula, China

Zhankun Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes field investigation, 3D modeling, spatial analysis, and deep neural network prospectivity modeling to understand the association between gold mineralization and structural deformation and to identify deep exploration targets at the Xiadian orogenic deposit in Eastern China. The research finds that gold mineralization is primarily located in convex fault segments and NE-striking areas, associated with the dip angle of the fault and steep segments of the detachment fault. The study demonstrates the utility of 3D prospectivity modeling in understanding orogenic gold distribution and related structural controls.

Reactive Flows in Porous Media: Challenges in Theoretical and Numerical Methods

Anthony J. C. Ladd et al.

Summary: This article reviews theoretical and computational research on the flow of reactive fluids in porous media, focusing on nonlinear feedback mechanisms that can enhance permeability. It discusses the evolution of geological forms inferred from these mechanisms and geotechnical applications, as well as the limitations and successes of Darcy-scale modeling and pore-scale modeling. Recent research on validation of pore-scale simulations, particularly through visual observations from microfluidic experiments, is also included.

Evolution of Pyrite Compositions at the Sizhuang Gold Deposit, Jiaodong Peninsula, Eastern China: Implications for the Genesis of Jiaodong-Type Orogenic Gold Mineralization

Zhankun Liu et al.

Summary: The textures and trace elements of pyrite in the Sizhuang gold deposit indicate that the formation of gold deposits may be influenced by deep high-temperature magmatic waters and meteoric water infiltration. Gold mineralization at the Sizhuang deposit is interpreted to be controlled by pressure-driver owing to the seismic activities in the Jiaojia fault system.

Metal remobilization from country rocks into the Jiaodong-type orogenic gold systems, Eastern China: New constraints from scheelite and galena isotope results at the Xiadian and Majiayao gold deposits

Zhankun Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the formation of gold ore systems in the Jiaodong Peninsula is influenced by the composition of the surrounding country rocks. The interaction between the ore-forming fluids and local rocks plays a critical role in the generation of similar metallogenic features in the Jiaodong gold deposits.
