Surface meltwater runoff routing through a coupled supraglacial-proglacial drainage system, Inglefield Land, northwest Greenland

Ya Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals the rapid expansion of the ablation zone of the northwest Greenland Ice Sheet (NW GrIS) over the past two decades. The coupled supraglacial-proglacial drainage system at Inglefield Land facilitates the direct evacuation of surface meltwater from the ice surface to the ocean, with minimal subglacial storage or delays. The study also demonstrates the capability of multi-temporal satellite imaging in tracking the source-to-sink path of NW GrIS meltwater from the ice surface to the global ocean.

Supraglacial streamflow and meteorological drivers from southwest Greenland

Rohi Muthyala et al.

Summary: This study presents long-term discharge data for a supraglacial stream catchment in southwest Greenland, capturing diurnal and seasonal variability. Shortwave radiation is the primary driver of melting, but its contribution decreases during high-melt episodes, while longwave radiation, sensible heat fluxes, and latent heat fluxes become more important. The timing of daily maximum discharge changes, possibly due to the expansion and contraction of the stream network.

Recent changes to Arctic river discharge

Dongmei Feng et al.

Summary: This study calculates daily streamflow in 486,493 pan-Arctic river reaches from 1984-2018 and reveals larger and more heterogenous total water export and water export acceleration than previously reported. Significant differences were found across basins, ecoregions, stream orders, human regulation, and permafrost regimes. The study also identified significant changes in the spring freshet and summer stream intermittency.

Supraglacial River Forcing of Subglacial Water Storage and Diurnal Ice Sheet Motion

L. C. Smith et al.

Summary: The study reveals a strong correlation between short-term ice speed acceleration and supraglacial river discharge, indicating the importance of supraglacial rivers and subglacial water storage fluctuations in driving ice motion. These findings challenge the theoretical steady state basal sliding laws and suggest that moulin and proglacially induced fluctuations in subglacial water storage play a key role in short-term ice accelerations.
