Contribution of deep-earth fluids to the geothermal system: A case study in the Arxan volcanic region, northeastern China

Yueju Cui et al.

Summary: Investigations of hot spring water and gas in the Arxan volcanic region in northeastern China are important for assessing geothermal resources and understanding groundwater circulation, volcano, and earthquake activities. The origins of water and gas in the region were determined through field surveys and geochemical analysis. The results show that the water samples are fresh water, predominantly derived from meteoric water with a small contribution from deep-earth fluids. The gas samples were found to be composed mainly of nitrogen, with traces of oxygen, argon, and helium, with the latter being derived from both the crust and upper mantle. These findings provide valuable information for studying geothermal systems.

Magmatic System and Seismicity of the Arxan Volcanic Group in Northeast China

Jie Li et al.

Summary: The Arxan volcanic group in China is among the largest active volcanic fields. Although its last eruption occurred around 2,000 years ago, it still has the potential for future eruptions. The spatial distribution and migration channel of the magmatic reservoirs in this area are unclear. Through precise location of microearthquakes and studying the 3-D velocity structure using high-quality seismic data, it was found that the Arxan volcanoes share the same magmatic system and that the system is still active at present.

Volcanic activity and gas emissions along the South Sandwich Arc

Emma J. Liu et al.

Summary: The South Sandwich Volcanic Arc is a remote and enigmatic volcanic arc characterized by persistent gas emissions and frequent eruptive activity. Detailed measurements during an expedition in January 2020 revealed continuous gas emissions from Mt. Michael on Saunders Island, as well as low temperature fumaroles at active centers indicating interaction between magmatic fluids and hydrothermal systems. Carbon isotope measurements suggest a mantle-dominated carbon source along with a possible mixing of upper mantle and subduction components.

Sources of CH4 with variable carbon isotopes from Changbaishan volcano in NE China: Implications for the feeding system

Feixiang Wei et al.

Summary: This study reports the chemical and isotopic data of methane and helium gases from the Changbaishan volcano, revealing a complex origin of methane possibly originating from ancient subduction fluids and MORB-like materials from the asthenosphere. The study does not support material connections between the subducting west Pacific slab and the Changbaishan volcano. Suggestions for volcanic gas monitoring at Changbaishan volcano are also provided based on the findings.

Fluxes and genesis of carbon dioxide emissions from Cenozoic volcanic fields in NE China

Zhao WenBin et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of Cenozoic volcanic activity in NE China on global climate and environmental change, elucidates key processes in deep carbon cycling on Earth, and highlights the significant carbon reservoir formed by volcanic activity in the upper mantle. Through research on volcanic fields in NE China, the authors evaluate the emission of volcanic CO2 and identify the origins and compositions of volcanic gases.
