Gastric microbiota: an emerging player in gastric cancer

Shizhen Zhou et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer (GC) is a common and highly fatal cancer worldwide. The most widely accepted microbial factor influencing GC is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. H. pylori causes inflammation, immune reactions, and activation of multiple signaling pathways, leading to acid deficiency, epithelial atrophy, dysplasia, and ultimately GC. Complex microbial populations have been found in the human stomach, and H. pylori can affect the abundance and diversity of other bacteria. The interactions among gastric microbiota collectively contribute to the development of GC. Certain intervention strategies, such as probiotics, dietary fiber, and microbiota transplantation, may restore healthy microbiota and help mitigate gastric disorders. This review highlights the specific role of gastric microbiota in GC and aims to facilitate the development of effective prevention and therapeutic approaches for GC.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii May Cause Patients to Develop Polymicrobial Bloodstream Infection

Qingqing Chen et al.

Summary: Polymicrobial Acinetobacter baumannii bloodstream infections (AB-BSI), caused by multiple microorganisms, account for a significant proportion among all AB-BSI cases. Although it does not affect mortality, polymicrobial AB-BSI is associated with slightly longer hospital stays. Multidrug resistance is associated with the development of polymicrobial AB-BSI but does not directly cause it, while resistance to piperacillin/tazobactam is highly correlated with polymicrobial AB-BSI.

The Prognostic Factors of Bloodstream Infection in Immunosuppressed Elderly Patients: A Retrospective, Single-center, Five-year Cohort Study

Hongxia Lin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of immunosuppressed elderly patients with bloodstream infection and identified ICU admission, coronary heart disease, biliary infection, and the use of tigecycline as significant risk factors for 90-day mortality.

Machine-learning based prediction and analysis of prognostic risk factors in patients with candidemia and bacteraemia: a 5-year analysis

Yali Gao et al.

Summary: Bacteraemia has serious outcomes, and secondary candidemia is frequently seen in hospitalised patients. This study used machine learning to identify prognostic factors related to death in patients with concomitant candidemia and bacteraemia. The findings provide valuable information for clinicians to treat these patients.

Blood Glucose Levels and Mortality in Patients With Sepsis: Dose-Response Analysis of Observational Studies

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: The study included 10 cohort studies involving 26,429 patients, of which 5 were prospective studies and 5 retrospective studies. The effect of blood glucose on mortality may differ in patients with versus without diabetes. Diabetic patients with blood glucose below 145 mg/dL may have poorer prognosis compared to patients without established diabetes.

Predictors of mortality in adult patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection: a meta-analysis and systematic review

Mohan Ju et al.

Summary: Multiple factors are associated with mortality in patients with MRSA bloodstream infections, including severe sepsis or septic shock, congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, malignancy, infective endocarditis, and nosocomial infection. Timely surgical intervention, appropriate antimicrobial treatment, and assessment of disease severity based on the APACHE II score are important for improving patient outcomes in cases of MRSA bloodstream infections.
