Invited review: Antimicrobial resistance in bovine mastitis pathogens: A review of genetic determinants and prevalence of resistance in European countries

Amalia Naranjo-Lucena et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is becoming an urgent and growing problem globally, posing threats to both human and animal health. Actions have been taken in the animal health sector to address the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Mastitis, the most common infection in dairy cattle, was studied to analyze genetic determinants in staphylococci, streptococci, and Enterobacteriaceae isolated from mastitic milk samples, and to compare the resistance percentages to various antimicrobials across European countries.

Superantigens promote Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection by eliciting pathogenic interferon-gamma production

Stephen W. Tuffs et al.

Summary: This study reveals the pathogenic mechanism of Staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) in bacterial infections. The findings show that SAgs promote bacterial survival by manipulating the immune response to inhibit effective clearing of the bacteria. This research provides critical therapeutic targets for preventing persistent or severe Staphylococcus aureus diseases.

Antimicrobial resistance genes aph(3′)-III, erm(B), sul2 and tet(W) abundance in animal faeces, meat, production environments and human faeces in Europe

Dongsheng Yang et al.

Summary: This study compares the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across different animal species, production environments, and humans in Europe. The results show significant variations in ARG abundance among animal species, environments, and humans. The variations are mainly influenced by differences between farms (pigs) or within farms (broilers, veal calves, and turkeys). A decrease in ARG abundance along pig and broiler production chains is observed. The study also finds a high correlation between qPCR data and previously published metagenomic data of ARG abundance.

Virulence and antimicrobial resistance gene profiles of Staphylococcus aureus associated with clinical mastitis in cattle

Neelam et al.

Summary: This study characterized Staphylococcus aureus isolated from mastitic milk of cattle and found that it harbored several antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that S. aureus exhibited resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The high occurrence rate of antibiotic-resistant and virulent S. aureus highlights the need for appropriate strategies to control its spread to the human population.

Prevalence, antibiotic resistance, and enterotoxin genes of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk and dairy products worldwide: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reviewed research on Staphylococcus aureus in milk and dairy products worldwide. The results showed that the prevalence of S. aureus in raw milk was higher than in dairy products and pasteurized milk. The resistance rates of penicillin and ampicillin were found to be high, and the antibiotic resistance of ampicillin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol increased over time. The study also found a high prevalence of staphylococcal enterotoxins, with the highest rates associated with SEC and SEA genes. Improving the health of milking animals, elevating milking hygiene, and using pasteurization can ensure the hygiene and safety of raw milk.

Antimicrobial Resistance Genes Analysis of Publicly Available Staphylococcus aureus Genomes

Vincenzo Pennone et al.

Summary: This study analyzed publicly available genomes of Staphylococcus aureus and identified different antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in chromosomes and plasmids. Differences in the distribution of ARGs and clonal complexes (CC) were observed among continents. Temporal changes over the past 20 years showed a decrease in MRSA and macrolide resistance occurrence in plasmids, while the occurrence of ARGs associated with aminoglycoside resistance increased.

The prevalence of bovine mastitis-associated Staphylococcus aureus in China and its antimicrobial resistance rate: A meta-analysis

Kuan Wang et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus-associated bovine mastitis in China. The study found that the prevalence of S. aureus has decreased over time, but is still higher in China compared to Western countries. The antimicrobial resistance analysis showed high resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics.

Occurrence and Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus Strains along the Production Chain of Raw Milk Cheeses in Poland

Joanna Gajewska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus in the artisanal cheese production chain from unpasteurized milk and found that many strains exhibited antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation ability. It suggests that the production of raw milk cheeses may contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance and virulent S. aureus.

ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANCE PROFILE OF Staphylococcus aureus STRAINS IN THE PORK SUPPLY CHAIN

Valeria Velasco et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antibiotic-resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus strains through the pork supply chain. The results showed that a majority of the strains exhibited antimicrobial resistance, with a higher prevalence in pigs and a high rate of penicillin resistance. Multidrug-resistance strains were also detected, with the most common resistance profile being resistance to penicillin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline simultaneously.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus shows increasing antimicrobial resistance over time, with penicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and gentamycin having the highest resistance rates. Africa, Asia, and Latin America display higher resistance rates, with no significant differences in resistance based on the clinical origin of the isolates.

Prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and pattern of antimicrobial resistance in mastitis milk of cattle in Chitwan, Nepal

Asmita Shrestha et al.

Summary: This study identified a high prevalence of S. aureus-mediated subclinical mastitis in dairy herds in Chitwan, Nepal, with a small proportion being MRSA carrying a mecA gene. The contamination of milk by S. aureus, CoNS, and MRSA poses a public health risk due to their resistance to commonly used antibiotics. It is recommended to screen dairy herds for subclinical mastitis and treat animals based on antibiotic susceptibility tests to combat antimicrobial resistance. Future research should focus on exploring additional antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus species beyond the mecA gene to ensure public health.

The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in milk and dairy products in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Mashael Alghizzi et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high prevalence of MRSA in raw milk and unpacked cheese in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a significant portion showing multidrug resistance and vancomycin resistance genes. This suggests that these dairy products could serve as potential vehicles for the transmission of MRSA, highlighting the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices.
