Heterogeneity in the Identification of Potential Drug-Drug Interactions in the Intensive Care Unit: A Systematic Review, Critical Appraisal, and Reporting Recommendations

Tinka Bakker et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between methodological choices and pDDI frequency in ICU patients and provided reporting recommendations. The analysis revealed significant heterogeneity in methodological choices and a high risk of bias in the majority of studies. High risk of bias, small sample size, and use of drug prescriptions instead of administrations were associated with a higher pDDI frequency.

Antimicrobial resistance genes aph(3′)-III, erm(B), sul2 and tet(W) abundance in animal faeces, meat, production environments and human faeces in Europe

Dongsheng Yang et al.

Summary: This study compares the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across different animal species, production environments, and humans in Europe. The results show significant variations in ARG abundance among animal species, environments, and humans. The variations are mainly influenced by differences between farms (pigs) or within farms (broilers, veal calves, and turkeys). A decrease in ARG abundance along pig and broiler production chains is observed. The study also finds a high correlation between qPCR data and previously published metagenomic data of ARG abundance.

Impact of fertilization with pig or calf slurry on antibiotic residues and resistance genes in the soil

Judith Huygens et al.

Summary: Antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes can enter the environment through fertilization with animal manure. A longitudinal study found a significant increase in gene copy number of tet(M), erm(B), erm(F) and sul2 in soil after fertilization, and tet(B), tet(Q) and tet(L) were the least abundant genes. Multiple antibiotic residues were detected in soil and manure, and there was a positive association between the presence of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes in soil.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Prevalence of Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli from Dogs and Cats in Northeastern China from 2012 to 2021

Yifan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the drug-resistance trends of canine Escherichia coli isolates in Northeast China from 2012-2021 and the differences in drug-resistance of E. coli of different origins in 2021. The results showed that drug resistance among pet dogs was decreasing, while resistance among working dogs was increasing. Resistance genes bla(CTX-M) and bla(CTX-M+TEM) were dominant among ESBL producers. The consistency between resistance phenotypes and genes was high. ESBL E. coli carrying bla(NDM) were isolated from working dogs, and one strain carried both mcr-1 and bla(NDM-4). Companion cats had a higher prevalence of ESBL E. coli, with phylogroup B2 being dominant.

Antimicrobial agent use in small animals what are the prescribing practices, use of PK-PD principles, and extralabel use in the United States?

Mark G. Papich

Summary: This review outlines the availability and deficiencies of current antimicrobial agents for companion animals in the United States, emphasizing the unmet needs for treating antibiotic drug-resistant infections and new pathogens in cats. Concerns are raised about the use of unapproved antimicrobial agents for dogs and cats, and the potential risk of producing drug-resistant bacteria that could pose a public health risk. Collaboration is needed to incentivize the approval of new agents that are more suitable for treating infections in companion animals while reducing the risk of drug-resistant bacteria transmission to humans and the environment.

Antibiotics were found to be ubiquitous in surface water, with different concentrations and distribution ranges in East Asian countries like China and South Korea compared to Southeast Asian nations. Effluent from wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture and livestock production activities, and urban sewage were identified as principal sources of antibiotics in surface water, while the ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance were highlighted. Collaborative efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to manage and reduce the burden of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in water bodies of East and Southeast Asian countries.
