Comparing public attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and behaviours towards antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance in Australia, United Kingdom, and Sweden (2010-2021): A systematic review, meta-analysis, and comparative policy analysis

Summary: This study compares public knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), and Sweden, as well as the policy approaches taken in each country to address inappropriate antibiotic use. The findings indicate that Sweden has stricter control over community antibiotic use, while the UK and Australia rely more on practitioner and public education. The results also show that respondents in Australia and the UK are more likely to report beliefs and behaviors not aligned with appropriate antibiotic use compared to those in similar studies conducted in Sweden.

What the public in England know about antibiotic use and resistance in 2020: a face-to-face questionnaire survey

The findings revealed variations in knowledge and attitudes among the participants. Individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnic minorities, and those with lower education levels demonstrated less understanding about antibiotics and resistance.

Prevalence of inappropriate use behaviors of antibiotics and related factors among chinese antibiotic users: an online cross-sectional survey

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of inappropriate use behaviors of antibiotics among Chinese users and explored the factors related to these behaviors. The results showed that a significant proportion of respondents engaged in self-medication, self-storage of antibiotics, and non-adherence to antibiotic treatment. Factors such as age, education level, self-perceived health status, and antibiotic knowledge were associated with these inappropriate use behaviors.

Perceptions and attitudes about antibiotic resistance in the general public and general practitioners in France

Although antibiotic use is decreasing, there is high pressure from patients, especially elderly patients, on general practitioners to prescribe antibiotics. General practitioners play a key role in reducing antibiotic use.

Factors such as age, gender, education, occupation, and knowledge about URTI were found to be associated with KAP. Community interventions, such as educational campaigns, should be promptly designed and implemented to address the differences in demographics of the target audience.

The results showed that Syrians had good knowledge of COVID-19 but had poor knowledge and practice related to antibiotic use and resistance. It is recommended that community education programs be developed to increase public awareness of antibiotic usage and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
