Systematic review of wastewater surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in human populations

K. K. Chau et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined studies using wastewater for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance and found a high overall concordance between wastewater and human AMR prevalence estimates despite diverse approaches. Future research could benefit from time/location-matched sampling and longitudinal studies to identify optimal practices.

Evaluating the Role of Wastewaters as Reservoirs of Antibiotic-Resistant ESKAPEE Bacteria Using Phenotypic and Molecular Methods

Syeda Samar Mustafa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of antibiotic-resistant ESKAPEE bacteria in nonclinical and clinical wastewaters. It finds that wastewaters are significant carriers of drug-resistant ESKAPEE bacteria and play an important role in their dissemination.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Drivers-A Review

Mohammad Irfan et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a critical issue that affects humanity, livestock, agriculture, and the ecosystem. Widespread sociocultural and financial practices have complicated resistance management. Hospital effluent, agricultural waste, and wastewater treatment facilities have been identified as potential routes for the spread of resistant bacteria. Health-care organizations have started addressing antimicrobial resistance, but are still in the early stages.

Wastewater treatment plants as a reservoir of integrase and antibiotic resistance genes - An epidemiological threat to workers and environment

Wiktor Zielinski et al.

Summary: The study reveals that conventional mechanical and biological wastewater treatment fails to completely remove pollutants, leading to the accumulation of antibiotics and heavy metals in surface water bodies, posing a threat to the environment and human health. There is also a risk of multi-drug resistant microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants, highlighting the need for stringent control measures.

Wastewaters, with or without Hospital Contribution, Harbour MDR, Carbapenemase-Producing, but Not Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae

Adela Teban-Man et al.

Summary: Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (CPKP) were isolated from influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants with or without hospital contribution. Multiple carbapenemase genes were observed in the strains tested, with various combinations present in over half of the strains. All tested strains exhibited multi-drug resistance and similar antibiotic susceptibility patterns and gene-type profiles regardless of hospital contribution to the wastewater type.

Antibiotic-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Wastewater of Abattoirs

Timo Homeier-Bachmann et al.

Summary: Antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae are commonly found in wastewaters from pig and poultry slaughterhouses, with high rates of multidrug resistance. Colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae were detected in both poultry and pig water samples, while no carbapenem resistance was found. These resistant bacteria were directly observed in discharge from abattoirs, indicating the potential contamination of environmental surfaces.
