Escherichia coli Isolates Harboring blaNDM Variants and 16S Methylases Belonging to Clonal Complex 131 in Southern Punjab, Pakistan

Faiza Sarwar et al.

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC) isolates were obtained from five tertiary care hospitals in southern Punjab, Pakistan, with 57 isolates carrying the bla(NDM) gene. The most common variants were bla(NDM-1) and bla(NDM-5), and the predominant clonal complex was complex 131, accounting for 82.5% of bla(NDM)-positive strains. Urgent large-scale surveillance studies and active infection control policies are recommended to prevent future epidemics.

Multilocus Sequence Typing of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates Harboring blaOXA-23 and blaIMP in Cattle from Punjab, Pakistan

Minhas Alam et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii in cattle in Pakistan. The results showed an overall prevalence of A. baumannii at 3.31%, with carbapenem-resistant isolates identified. This finding highlights the need for an urgent and effective surveillance system to limit the transmission of CRAB in cattle.

Genetic Diversity of Escherichia coli Coharboring mcr-1 and Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases from Poultry

Arslan Jamil et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of mcr-positive colistin-resistant E. coli among poultry. The presence of resistance genes, including those for colistin and beta-lactam antibiotics, was observed. The main genotype detected was ST1035, and the resistant strains mainly belonged to the CC131 complex. It is recommended to establish continuous monitoring systems in veterinary and clinical settings, and further national-level studies are needed to control the increasing resistance among Enterobacterales in poultry settings.

Distribution and genetic diversity of multi-drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae at the human-animal-environment interface in Pakistan

Bilal Aslam et al.

Summary: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathogen that is widespread in humans, animals, and plant-based foods, and it plays a role in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes between different ecological niches. The study found that K. pneumoniae is prevalent among humans, animals, and the environment, and it exhibits significant resistance to antibiotics. The analysis of antibiotic resistance genes revealed the presence of various carbapenem resistance genes. Additionally, the study identified multiple sequence types and clonal complexes.

The Escherichia coli Sequence Type 131 Harboring Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases and Carbapenemases Genes from Poultry Birds

Sana Ilyas et al.

Summary: The study revealed diverse genotypes of ESBL-Ec and carbapenemase-producing E. coli in poultry from Pakistan, with main sequence types being ST131 and ST8051. The bla(CTX-M) and bla(TEM) genes were detected in poultry E. coli strains, while the bla(VIM), bla(NDM), and bla(IMP) genes were found in carbapenemase-producing isolates.

Rapid detection of extended spectrum β-lactamase producing Escherichia coli isolated from fresh pork meat and pig cecum samples using multiplex recombinase polymerase amplification and lateral flow strip analysis

Sitthichai Kanokudom et al.

Summary: The study developed a lateral flow strip assay for rapid and simultaneous detection of multiple bla genes, showing a high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in pork meat and fecal samples. The sensitivity and specificity of the assay were high, making it a promising tool for ESBL detection without the need for equipment.

mcr-1 Identified in Fecal Escherichia coli and Avian Pathogenic E. coli (APEC) From Brazil

Nicolle Lima Barbieri et al.

Summary: This study examined the presence of mcr genes in 107 E. coli isolates from production poultry in Brazil, revealing a high prevalence of mcr-1 in 62 isolates. Additional analyses such as plasmid replicon typing and antimicrobial resistance phenotype characterization were conducted for further understanding. The findings suggest that the high prevalence of mcr-1 in poultry could potentially pose a threat to antimicrobial resistance in the human food chain.

Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC): An Overview of Virulence and Pathogenesis Factors, Zoonotic Potential, and Control Strategies

Dipak Kathayat et al.

Summary: APEC is a pathogen that causes colibacillosis in avian species, potentially posing a foodborne zoonotic risk. In addition to known virulence factors, other factors contribute to APEC pathogenesis. APEC shows resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, highlighting the need for effective vaccines and alternative therapies.
