The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Antibiotics: Methods, Interpretation, Clinical Relevance

Beata Kowalska-Krochmal et al.

Summary: The inefficiency of medical therapies for curing patients with bacterial infections calls for active search for new therapeutic strategies and careful selection of antibiotics based on various parameters including microbiological considerations. Proper assessment of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies and ensuring the effectiveness of infection therapy. This paper discusses methods for MIC estimation, factors influencing MIC results, and possibilities of utilizing MIC in clinical practice with consideration of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters.

Potential hepatoprotective effects of flavonoids contained in propolis from South Sulawesi against chemotherapy agents

Muhamad Sahlan et al.

Summary: The study aimed to test the hepatoprotective effect of flavonoid in propolis from South Sulawesi against doxorubicin and epirubicin-induced liver damage. Results showed that the propolis group with a dosage of 200 mg/kg had the lowest ALT levels and exhibited potential protective effects against hepatotoxicity induced by doxorubicin and epirubicin.

A physico-chemical study of the interaction of ethanolic extracts of propolis with bacterial cells

Virginia Vadillo-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The interaction between propolis and bacterial cells at sub-inhibitory concentrations induces changes in the physico-chemical properties of the cell surface, including volumetric charge density, electrophoretic softness, and hydrophobicity. These changes, dose-dependent and consistent with the accumulation and penetration of propolis components, suggest a structural mechanism of action resulting in cell wall damage or perturbations.

The use of propolis as a functional food ingredient: A review

Yanet Irigoiti et al.

Summary: Propolis, a resinous product collected by bees, shows antioxidant and pharmacological activity that makes it an attractive natural product as a functional ingredient in foods. Encapsulation techniques like spray drying and nanoparticle incorporation are promising in transforming propolis into alcohol-free powder for food systems, while further studies are needed on its incorporation, effective dose, and sensory properties in final products.
