Characterization of solid and liquid carbonization products of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and investigation of the PVC-derived adsorbent for the removal of organic compounds from water

Nan Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics were transformed into microporous carbon materials using KOH as an activator. The optimized carbon material showed a high surface area and pore volume, and the carbonization process yielded aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. The PVC-derived carbon materials exhibited excellent adsorption performance for removing tetracycline from water. This study provides a facile and environmentally friendly approach for valorizing PVC into adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Enrofloxacin and Sulfamethoxazole Sorption on Carbonized Leonardite: Kinetics, Isotherms, Influential Effects, and Antibacterial Activity toward S. aureus ATCC 25923

Chanat Chokejaroenrat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption capabilities of carbonized leonardite (cLND) for removing antibiotics from water, showing potential for efficient removal. The results demonstrated that cLND samples prepared at 450°C and 550°C effectively adsorbed sulfamethoxazole and enrofloxacin, retaining the antibiotics and serving as a low-cost adsorbent.

Oxidative degradation of aqueous organic contaminants over shape-tunable MnO2 nanomaterials via peroxymonosulfate activation

Xiuru Bi et al.

Summary: Cryptomelane-type MnO2 nanomaterials were successfully synthesized through a heat treatment method, and different morphologies such as nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanofibers were obtained by adjusting reaction conditions. The MnO2 nanofibers exhibited enhanced catalytic activity and recyclability for oxidative degradation of various organic compounds. Overall, the study demonstrated the potential of MnO2 nanofibers in water remediation applications.

Characterization of Beeswax, Candelilla Wax and Paraffin Wax for Coating Cheeses

Adolfo Bucio et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the physical and mechanical properties of beeswax, candelilla wax, paraffin wax, and blends, with beeswax and blends being identified as the best coatings for cheeses. XRD, FTIR, DSC, and other tests were used to analyze the waxes, and cheeses coated with beeswax showed the best performance in terms of weight loss, moisture retention, and dimensional stability.

Practical use of response surface methodology for optimization of veterinary antibiotic removal using UV/H2O2 process

K. Jutarvutikul et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing H2O2 dosage at neutral pH facilitated the degradation of ENR, while at slightly acidic pH it facilitated the degradation of SMX and OTC. Combining the UV/H2O2 system effectively removes antibiotics from aquaculture discharge water.

Relevance of animal studies in the toxicolnical assessment of oil and wax hydrocarbons. Solving the puzzle for a new outlook in risk assessment

Juan-Carlos Carrillo et al.

Summary: Paraffin waxes and white mineral oils, derived from a common feed-stock, were traditionally regulated separately until liver epithelioid granuloma was found in F-344 rats exposed to these substances. This led to a joint assessment under the term mineral hydrocarbons, ignoring their compositional differences. The ongoing paradigm shift, dominated by the concept of MOSH, should consider evaluating waxes separately from mineral oils due to their distinct chemical compositions and potential human health hazards.
