Mislabeling in seafood products sold on the Italian market: A systematic review and meta-analysis

A. Giusti et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis on mislabeling in seafood products sold in the Italian market. The overall mislabeling rate was found to be 28.4%, falling within the international range. Significant differences in mislabeling rates were observed for different fish taxa, distribution channels, and geographical areas. Despite some biases in the selected scientific papers, this study provides valuable evidence for policy making to minimize seafood fraud impacts.

Species authentication of canned mackerel: Challenges in molecular identification and potential drivers of mislabelling

Anna Mottola et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-step mini-barcoding approach was used for the first time to identify canned mackerel sold in Italian markets. It was found that the ambiguous use of generic terms on labels could lead to mislabelling and fraudulent activities, highlighting the need for an urgent update of European legislation to address the challenges of full chain traceability.

The 11 sins of seafood: Assessing a decade of food fraud reports in the global supply chain

Sophie Lawrence et al.

Summary: Seafood is a commodity that is highly susceptible to food fraud due to its complex and opaque supply chains. This study analyzes reported seafood fraud incidents and identifies illegal veterinary residues as a significant concern, with most reports originating from farmed seafood in Vietnam, China, and India. The analysis also highlights the frequency of fraudulent or insufficient documentation in internationally traded goods, indicating deceptive practices further down the supply chain.

DNA barcode markers applied to seafood authentication: an updated review

Telmo J. R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: This review presents the current status of DNA barcodes in seafood species authentication, covering barcode regions, reference databases, related methodologies, and various applications. COI gene is the preferred target in animal species identification, and Sanger sequencing-based DNA barcoding is the most widely used approach in seafood authentication. However, significant advances have been made in recent years towards DNA barcoding strategies, including the use of next generation sequencing.

A comprehensive review of food fraud terminologies and food fraud mitigation guides

Kelsey Robson et al.

Summary: With ambiguous definitions and lack of specific guidance on food fraud in the food industry, there are challenges in understanding and preventing it effectively. The lack of clarity has resulted in varying definitions and a gap in knowledge regarding prevention and mitigation strategies. Further research and collaboration are needed to establish common practices and address the issue of food fraud comprehensively.

Determinants of fishery and aquaculture products consumption at home in the EU28

Javier Cantillo et al.

Summary: The European Union is the largest market for fishery and aquaculture products in the world. A study on consumer preferences in the EU market found that health benefits and taste are the main reasons for consuming these products more frequently, while lack of understanding of product information leads to less frequent consumption. Other factors influencing consumption frequency of FAPs include price, age, wealth, preferences, etc.

Bioinformatics Approach to Mitigate Mislabeling in EU Seafood Market and Protect Consumer Health

Gabriella Vindigni et al.

Summary: Fisheries products are widely traded commodities, but fraud in the industry poses serious threats to human health. Despite EU regulations, fraud remains prevalent due to the substitution of more expensive fish with cheaper species. Molecular techniques like DNA barcoding are crucial in detecting fraud and protecting consumer interests in a globalized fish market.
