The protective mechanism of a novel polysaccharide from Lactobacillus-fermented Nostoc commune Vauch. on attenuating cadmium-induced kidney injury in mice

Hailong Li et al.

Summary: A novel polysaccharide, NCVP-F, obtained from Lactobacillus-fermented Nostoc commune Vauch., was found to have a protective effect against cadmium-induced kidney injury by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, inhibiting cytokine levels, and regulating gut microbiota. The polysaccharide had a lower molecular weight and higher contents of mannose and glucuronic acid compared to NCVP. These findings suggest that functional NCVP-F with low molecular weight may be more beneficial.

BOD and COD removal in vinasses from sugarcane alcoholic distillation by Chlorella vulgaris: Environmental evaluation

Maria Fernanda Soto et al.

Summary: Using vinasses from alcoholic distillation as a growth medium for microalgae such as Chlorella vulgaris can significantly reduce the contamination potential of sugarcane-derived liquors, leading to reductions in COD and BOD, as well as increased algal biomass production. Furthermore, post-fermentation processes resulted in significant reductions in human ingestion toxicity potential, terrestrial toxicity potential, and photochemical oxidation potential.
