Neuroprotective properties of queen bee acid by autophagy induction

Guadalupe Martinez-Chacon et al.

Summary: QBA is a novel autophagy inducer that triggers autophagy in various neuronal cell lines and mouse and fly models. The beclin-1 (BECN1) and mTOR pathways participate in the regulation of QBA-induced autophagy. Moreover, QBA stimulates SIRT1, which promotes autophagy by the deacetylation of critical ATG proteins. QBA-mediated autophagy promotes neuroprotection in Parkinson's disease in vitro and in a mouse model and extends the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster.

Mitochondrial dysfunctions, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation as therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases: An update on current advances and impediments

Muneeb U. Rehman et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Alzheimer disease (AD), Parkinson disease (PD), and Huntington disease (HD) pose significant social and economic challenges due to their high prevalence and poor treatment outcomes. The lack of clarity regarding the underlying mechanisms of these diseases hampers drug development efforts. However, shared pathways such as mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation provide potential targets for therapeutic interventions to slow down or stop disease progression. This review aims to highlight recent advancements and findings in understanding shared mechanisms, providing insights for the development of more effective pharmacological interventions to reduce the onset or severity of NDs.

Natural Bioactive Molecules as Neuromedicines for the Treatment/Prevention of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Afshin Babazadeh et al.

Summary: The brain is susceptible to oxidative stress due to high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are associated with oxidative stress and have complex causes, making therapies less effective. Naturally occurring bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and essential fatty acids, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit brain health. This review explores the role of bioactives in supporting brain function and potentially treating NDDs.

Biceph-Net: A Robust and Lightweight Framework for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease Using 2D-MRI Scans and Deep Similarity Learning

Ashraf Haroon Rashid et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a leading cause of death in the elderly population. A lightweight framework called 'Biceph-net' is proposed for AD diagnosis using 2D MRI scans, which incorporates both intra-slice and inter-slice information. Compared to traditional 2D CNNs, Biceph-net demonstrates superior performance and includes an inbuilt neighbourhood-based model interpretation feature. In experiments, Biceph-net achieves a test accuracy of 100% for CN vs AD classification, 98.16% for MCI vs AD, and 97.80% for CN vs MCI vs AD.

Neuroprotective effects of curculigoside against Alzheimer?s disease via regulation oxidative stress mediated mitochondrial dysfunction in L-Glu-exposed HT22 cells and APP/PS1 mice

Wenqi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the neuroprotective effect of Curculigoside (CCG) on oxidative stress mediated mitochondrial dysfunction was investigated. CCG showed significant protective effects on damaged cells and transgenic mice, improving memory and behavior impairments, reducing protein deposition and neurofibrillary fiber tangles, and suppressing oxidative stress. The mechanism of action may involve the regulation of proteins related to mitochondrial dysfunction through the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Summary: The study compared the anti-aging effects of soybean, oyster, and sea cucumber protein hydrolysates, finding that soybean hydrolysate had the strongest impact on reversing aging-related learning and memory impairments and oxidative stress induced by D-galactose. Efforts to isolate and characterize the responsible anti-aging peptides led to the identification of two peptides, WPK and AYLH, from soybean hydrolysate that showed strong antioxidant activity in vitro. These findings suggest that soybean hydrolysate and its constituent peptides could be effective antioxidant agents for aging-related cognitive impairments and oxidative stress.
