Dioxin transfer simulation from feed to animal tissues and risk assessment

M. Pajurek et al.

Summary: This study aimed to simulate the transfer of dioxins from feed to tissues in farm animals using transfer models and assess the risk to consumers of food of animal origin. By analyzing over 700 feed samples, those exceeding the maximum permissible levels set by Commission Regulation No 277/2012/EU were selected. The calculated concentrations of PCDD/PCDF in chicken eggs, cow's milk, and pork were above the maximum permissible level in most cases.

The influence of different production systems on dioxin and PCB levels in chicken eggs from Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy regions (Italy) over 2017-2019 and consequent dietary exposure assessment

Sergio Ghidini et al.

Summary: The study found that the levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in eggs from different production systems and regions in Italy were generally low, but significantly higher in free-range eggs. The exposure levels through consumption of locally produced eggs did not exceed European food safety standards for the main age groups.

Dietary exposure and potential human health risk of dioxins in South Korea: Application of deterministic and probabilistic methods

Eun-Su Shin et al.

Summary: This study examined the risk of dietary exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in the general Korean population. The results showed that although the levels of these compounds in the air have significantly decreased following government regulations, their levels in human serum have not reduced at the same rate. This suggests that humans may unintentionally be exposed to these compounds through food ingestion. The study provides important toxicological information and can guide the development of food safety policies.

Transfer of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from oral exposure into cow's milk - Part I: state of knowledge and uncertainties

Torsten Krause et al.

Summary: Polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), collectively known as 'dioxins', as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental contaminants that can enter the food chain and have chronic toxic effects in humans. Milk and dairy products are an important pathway for human exposure to these contaminants. Transfer of dioxins and PCBs from feed to milk has been studied, but there is still variability in the data. Factors such as experimental conditions, cow performance parameters, and metabolic state can influence the transfer. Further research is needed, especially considering the increase in milk yield in recent years.

Feed as a source of dioxins and PCBs

M. Pajurek et al.

Summary: Dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls, classified as persistent organic pollutants, primarily enter the human body through the diet, with animal feed being a significant contributor. This study found that plant-based feed materials were the main source of exceedances of dioxin and PCB limits in feed, followed by vegetable oils and fats of animal origin.

Transfer of persistent organic pollutants in food of animal origin - Meta-analysis of published data

Farida Amutova et al.

Summary: The transfer of POPs in animal food products, particularly milk and eggs, and the bioconcentration factors in different tissues of animals have been studied. The results show that highly toxic PCDD/Fs and PCBs can transfer efficiently into milk, eggs, and liver. Differences in bioconcentration factors were observed in different studies, complicating the hierarchical analysis of tissues and congeners. High bioconcentration was also found for DDT and its metabolites.

Polychlorinated dioxins, furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in food from Italy: Estimates of dietaryintake and assessment

Grazia Barone et al.

Summary: The study investigated dietary intake of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) among different sex/age groups of the Italian population. Variations in concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in different food matrices were observed, with fish and seafood showing the highest levels and pork loin samples exceeding EU food law standards. The importance of controlling contaminants in fishery products, particularly in fish, was emphasized as a key exposure source for consumers.
