Modeling the impact of climate warming on potato phenology

Sahrish Naz et al.

Summary: The study shows that planting dates and maturity stages of potato crops in spring and autumn have been significantly impacted by changes in temperature over the past few decades, with thermal trends, crop management practices, and cultivar changes also playing a role. Growers have implemented adaptation strategies in response to these trends.

Yield responses of four common potato cultivars to an industry standard and alternative rotation in Atlantic Canada

Mohammad Amir Azimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated yield responses of four potato cultivars to two different rotations and their impact on soil nitrogen dynamics. Results showed that the rotation with red clover had higher soil nitrogen content but lower potato yields, while the alternative rotation with soybean positively affected yields of all cultivars. Russet Burbank was the highest yielding cultivar, and Shepody showed the least response to the alternative rotation.

Crop Water Deficit and Supplemental Irrigation Requirements for Potato Production in a Temperate Humid Region (Prince Edward Island, Canada)

Serban Danielescu et al.

Summary: The global increase in potato production is expected to result in higher irrigation needs, raising concerns about the sustainability of groundwater sources. This study estimated the crop water requirements and irrigation needs for potato production in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and evaluated their impact on aquifer storage. Depending on the efficiency and extent of the irrigation system, the irrigation water supply requirement can approach or exceed the groundwater recharge.

Climate Change Affects the Utilization of Light and Heat Resources in Paddy Field on the Songnen Plain, China

Ennan Zheng et al.

Summary: Efficient utilization of light and heat resources is crucial for cleaner rice production. This study used a crop model to predict rice growth, yield, and light and heat resource utilization under future climate change scenarios. It found that the rice growth period would decrease and yield would slightly increase under low and medium emission scenarios, but significantly decrease under high emission scenario. The utilization efficiency of light and heat resources would also be affected, with a decrease in heat utilization efficiency. Temperature was identified as the most influential meteorological factor. Optimizing the sowing date could improve rice yield and resource utilization, which is important for future agricultural cleaner production.

The coefficient of determination R-squared is more informative than SMAPE, MAE, MAPE, MSE and RMSE in regression analysis evaluation

Davide Chicco et al.

Summary: Regression analysis is a key component of supervised machine learning, predicting continuous targets from other variables. While binary classification has targets with two values, regression can have multiple values. However, there is no consensus on a standard metric for evaluating regression results, with commonly used measures like MSE, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE having interpretability limitations.

Predicting the response of a potato-grain production system to climate change for a humid continental climate using DSSAT

Brogan E. Tooley et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the vulnerability of potato and barley to climate change in Maine, USA, for the years 2050-2079. Results showed that under future climate conditions and elevated CO2, yield of all potato and barley varieties increased or remained unchanged. Adjusting planting date may not be an effective climate change adaptation strategy in this region, while elevated CO2 boosted crop growth and development.
