Structural characterization, and in vitro immunostimulatory and antitumor activity of an acid polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis

Bingna Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel heteropolysaccharide called SP90-1 with immunostimulatory and antitumor activity was discovered from Spirulina platensis. The study found that SP90-1 significantly enhanced the phagocytic capacity of cells, promoted the secretion of certain substances, and remarkably inhibited the growth of certain tumor cells.

Exopolysaccharides from the Energy Microalga Strain Botryococcus braunii: Purification, Characterization, and Antioxidant Activity

Wei-Nan Wang et al.

Summary: The study focused on extracting and purifying exopolysaccharides (EPS) from Botryococcus braunii SCS-1905 microalgae, which were found to be high-molecular-weight heteropolysaccharides containing uronic acid, protein, and sulfate groups. The EPS primarily consisted of galactose, glucose, arabinose, and minor amounts of fucose, with strong antioxidant activity in crude form. These findings suggest potential applications of B. braunii EPS as a natural antioxidant for health food production.

Characterization and anti-diabetic evaluation of sulfated polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis

Jingmin Liu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the structure, composition, cytotoxicity, and in vitro hypoglycemic activity of a polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis and its degradation fragments. The polysaccharides showed inhibitory effects on alpha-glucosidase, with PSP3 exhibiting the best efficacy. MTT assays demonstrated no cytotoxic activity of the polysaccharides, but they enhanced glucose uptake capacity. PSP3 showed the best in vitro hypoglycemic activity.

Characteristics and function of an extracellular polysaccharide from a green alga Parachlorella

Mitsuki Sasaki et al.

Summary: The green alga Parachlorella sp. BX1.5 has been found to produce a novel acidic rhamnan of high molecular mass, which shows thickening and resistance to environmental stress conditions when added to mayonnaise. This suggests its potential application as a thickener or food additive with improved oil-off properties.

Effect of chlortetracycline on the growth and intracellular components of Spirulina platensis and its biodegradation pathway

Ting Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of CTC and CTC + OTC significantly inhibited the growth of Spirulina platensis, while low concentrations of CTC + OTC (below 1.0 mg/L) did not harm the growth of microalgae. In the CTC group, chlorophyll-a and carotenoid content showed a parabolic trend with time extension.
