Rice as a vehicle for micronutrient fortification: a systematic review of micronutrient retention, organoleptic properties, and consumer acceptability

Euisun Pyo et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the micronutrient retention, organoleptic properties, and acceptability of fortified rice. The review finds that extrusion and coating fortification technologies show comparable results in terms of retention, organoleptic properties, and acceptability. Cooking fortified rice in excess water leads to increased micronutrient loss. Fortified rice with ferric pyrophosphate, zinc oxide, or zinc sulfate perform the best in all outcomes evaluated.

Using Portable X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy for Inexpensive and Quick Determination of Micronutrients in Barley Shoots

Waleed Amjad Khan et al.

Summary: Determining elemental concentrations in plant tissue samples is crucial for analyzing their nutritional content. In this study, the reliability of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectroscopy was compared with that of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the concentrations of four micronutrients in barley shoot samples. The pXRF method showed good correlation with ICP-MS results for zinc concentration and moderate correlations for iron and copper concentrations. However, no significant correlation was found for cadmium concentration. These findings highlight the potential of pXRF as a cost-effective alternative to ICP methods for determining zinc in plant samples.

Determination of essential elements (Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) in herbal teas by TXRF, FAAS and ICP-OES

Eva Margui et al.

Summary: This study compared results of essential element analysis in vegetation samples using different analytical approaches, finding suspension preparation and TXRF analysis to be sustainable and fast alternatives compared to traditional digestion and ICP-OES or FAAS analysis. Different methods were applied to herbal tea analysis for medicinal purposes.

Analytical Methods for Iron and Zinc Quantification in Plant Samples

Dinakaran Elango et al.

Summary: Biofortification is a sustainable solution to alleviate iron and zinc deficiency in food, with XRF being an efficient and economical tool for screening a large number of genotypes or breeding materials in biofortification programs. XRF is likely to replace ICP-OES, AAS, and colorimetric methods in large-scale screening steps, allowing for the quick identification of desired genomes. This review aims to provide an overview of commonly used analytical techniques for quantifying Fe and Zn contents in plant samples.

Grain Fe and Zn content, heterosis, combining ability and its association with grain yield in irrigated and aerobic rice

G. Anusha et al.

Summary: The study found contrasting effects of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) on grain micronutrient content in different growing environments, with hybrids showing positive correlation between grain yield and Fe/Zn content under limited water conditions. Testers T1 and T2 were identified as good combiners for grain Zn content under irrigated and aerobic conditions, respectively.
